On the Subject of an Interesting, Evolving World

This is more of a brainstorming exercise, if anything. Us folks intrigued by Destiny don't have much to go on and Bungie doesn't even seem to know what it's plan with Destiny is most of the time. Seeing that this is a 10-year plan, they best be solidifying that around now. So basically, I'm going to present some ideas on how to put this concept of an interesting, evolving world Bungie is going for into practice. Anyone feel free to add new ideas or discuss ones already given. Here I go: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Calendar and Time Based Elements: Change and eventfulness is the primary factor of creating a world that stays interesting over time. However, we can't expect Bungie to be making manual, seamless changes 24/7. By that taken into account, perhaps Bungie can introduce some sort of system that changes the world and adds events over time. Applications for this involve things like time of day, weather, real-world holiday festivities, ect. It would save Bungie a lot of worry setting all this stuff up ahead of time and then have it scripted to input into the servers and game at a certain time. An Ongoing Campaign: Bungie already appears to have something like this in mind. A close example I can think of is Spartan-Ops in Halo 4. Every week a new chapter of the campaign was released, keeping an ongoing story to keep players coming throughout the game's lifespan. It's just an example, I'm not saying Spartan-Ops is the perfect model to go off for this kind of idea. It's good to keep expanding on the storyline and lore of the setting. Emergent Events: Some games that do something like this off the top of my head are Guild Wars 2 and Fallout 3. Basically, you go around the world and sometimes a special event will pop up in an unscripted location and give you the option to confront it. If you participate in it, you will be rewarded. Changing Conditions: It's a big galaxy filled with intelligent, space-faring creatures with amazing technology. So why should the Vex only be on this one planet all the time? Can different factions create temporary alliances? Can they try to occupy each others' main worlds? I think it would be a good idea to have locations and enemies change paradigms from time to time. Player Economies: MMOs do this all the time. Players can buy, sell, and trade loot with each other as they see fit. Players can put out things they don't need to sell which are basically their own virtual shops. Other players have the option to search among other players' offers to find for something they're looking for and buy it. This helps keep players engaged with the game's various progression systems by offering an evolving economy that offers new weapons, armor, and such all the time. Evolving Enemies: The creatures you'll be fighting are every bit as part of the world as anything else. And the combat will be the primary back-bone of what drives Destiny's enjoyment. And after 100s of hours, if the enemies don't change, combat can become stale. This is basically how I felt about the Covenant by Halo: Reach. It only benefits the game to add new enemy units and tactics over time that force you to change the way you fight, especially if such elements aren't too diverse begin with. Deep and Varying Opportunities for Player Progression: Loot, leveling, customization. These are things that keep players coming back for years. A game like Borderlands adds years to its lifespan by randomizing loot and offering skill trees and increasing level caps. I'm not saying Destiny should copy it, but it's a good instance of this in practice. DLC and Expansions: Sometimes, there's just stuff you can't create without substantial effort and time that calls for a dedicated release. Extensive add-ons that add new elements to the game or even alter existing ones. It should go without saying how this works with keeping players engaged to a game with fresh experiences, so I'll spare you the details. Content Uniqueness: With big and ambitious games like this it's tempting for the developers' to reuse a map and give it a different name and put another type of enemy in there. It's easy to paint a gun purple and call it a totally new weapon. I'd like Bungie to stay away from this kind of rehashing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, there's a few of my raw ideas. Some of them may or may not tie into each other. It'll be interesting to see what Bungie ends up doing. Feel free to contribute whatever you like to the discussion. Heck, maybe Bungie might take notice of our ideas for all we know. What can Destiny do to hold your interest and keep you coming back? Any other games you'd like Destiny to take inspiration from? What would be effective methods to make such ideas easier to implement for Bungie?

  • I like the post but disagree with the shared real world events. I don't think in a place where the darkness is trying to destroy our species that we should all be running around in Christmas hats. And please save me the "that's when humanity needs it most" crap cos in pretty sure that in this world Jesus wouldn't mean as much as the traveller.

You played the Beta and saw Destiny beginning through the eyes of one out of millions of adventurers and all have experienced the same...up to this point. A year or two years from now someone new will purchase Destiny. How do you propose to introduce an ever evolving universe to those new players when all of the millions play on a single server or set of servers? It is very problematic to have a gathering of millions of Vanguards at a single, centralized tower when all are at different stages of character development in such an evolving environment.

I like the ongoing campaign idea. I feel one of the things that Guild Wars 2 has done that could apply to Destiny are these constant changes in the game world. Every couple of weeks, something happens that makes you feel the world is living, breathing. Heck, GW2 destroyed the main hub city during the first season of "Living Story". I'd love to see something like that in Destiny. Fallen and Hive battling for control, and actually taking possession of places if our Guardians aren't there to stem the tide. Something that makes what we do in the game world have a real effect on it. If we go lax in an area the Darkness breaks through and bad things happen. Then I'd feel like it's the living breathing world we've been promised. I'm a role player, and I love things that immerse me. I feel this kind of thing would make Destiny an even more epic experience than it already is.

    • Really like the ideas here, especially the enemy factions trying to occupy different areas. You might travel to an area and see fallen and the next day you see fallen battling cabal for control

    • That sounds sweet! Maybe, they could also have events tied to lunar cycles, eclipses, and so on. It would be cool, considering the sci-fi setting and what not.  Imagine playing, minding your own business, and suddenly you are being over run by the hive, you look up and see that the sun is eclipsed by the moon.  It sounds cool to me, what do you guys think?

      • good post.
Calendar and Time Based Elements:
I like the idea, but i dont think this would be easy from a technical stand point. I also no jack shit about what it would take.
An Ongoing Campaign:
Indeed. But i think we shall see that over the 10 year span. Maybe not as often as you would like. But you also need time to explore all the content given to us. I can wait a year to move on in the story. But hell. The more content the better so id be ok with whatever.
Emergent Events
These are public events. They have these. We have only seen a tiny percent. They have also said there would be events such as the Ambassadors showing up at the tower for a limited time. OR other places ( Assume the other places to be patrol mode hidden spots )
Changing Conditions
There was a mail sack where DeeJ mentioned something about the fact that the game universe could be altered over the duration of the game. I think we will see something similar to WoW where the original areas got a makeover with new stuff to explore etc. Maybe the traveler moves and tower gets destroyed. Who knows but i believe we will have this as well.
Player Economies:
YES YES YES YES! This is something i dearly want. Good news is that i believe we will get it eventually. They stated that they would not be releasing player to player trading at launch. However! That it was something they wanted to put into the game. They said that they needed to work out the balancing of the economy for the game. They also at one time a ways back, Had a job opening for someone with experience in In Game Economies. Auction houses etc. They are also partnered with Activision. look at WoW. Trade is a HUGE part of that game. I believe trade and auction house are inevitable.
Evolving Enemies
I think we will see this too. But i agree this would be integral long term.
Deep and Varying Opportunities for Player Progression:
Agreed! I really cant wait to run raids and play competitive multiplayer to see all of the stuff we can get. This is a big one for me.
DLC and Expansions
I think well be satisfied.
Content Uniqueness:
With the team that Bungie has assembled of Artists, coupled with their world building tool Grognok, I think that they are going to blow people away with this game. When i was in the Alpha i literally sat around the tower in one location just looking around, the sky, the city below, the tower itself, the traveler. This game is going to be very rich with content. Its a whole new universe with amazingly deep lore that we have barely begun to scratch the surface of. This game is going to be incredible.

      • I think most of the people on this thread should get together and build a game of tier own as there is some pretty cool ideas here but they just won't work and won't be featured in Destiny.

      • A lot of people are talking about War, Sky battles, faction vs. faction etc. and i completely agree. Certain aspects of the discussion i would like to pull from. Strdr stated:
The Cabal are staging a large invasion in (somewhere). Then you could take part of some of many smaller operations that are part of the defense. Then, next month: We are planning a large invasion against the Vex. Some fire-teams will have to take different objectives or areas. This combines large scale wars with a changing world. This can create a history within the game, so if no one plays the defense missions, the cabal will have that area. This means game-play will change overtime.
And too me, this sounds exactly like the Game PlanetSide 2, if you havn't checked it out, it is available for PC and soon to PS4. The idea, is that a certain large area is being overrun by multiple factions or species. Fighting over a particular location, building, planet, item etc. Planetside 2 is a make-up of three factions, fighting over a location, and i wouldn't be surprised if Bungie is already pulling from this free to play FPS. Spacebattles sounds like the above, but consisting of the aspects behind Battlefront 2. As ImeratorNex stated earlier,
You need to take down X enemy's ship by taking out its power supply in the middle while Y enemy's power supply is in the rear. Or perhaps even other way's like boarding the ship and cutting off the life support
This idea sounds amazingly hectic for me to even comprehend, but what gets my hair on end is the concept of the two combined! The fight for Venus - Imagine Earth has successfully taken control of Venus, decimating nearly 90% of the Vex population. While the humans are moving in and attempting to set up shop, the Cabal from Mars hear of the Vex' defeat and cease the opportunity to take the planet for their keeping. Fighting back, the Vex, the Humans, and the Cabal are in an all out war defending and liberating Venus. While all this is going on ground level, space battles are consistently getting larger, trying to hold back Cabal's reinforcements. Faction upon faction is attempting to acclaim the rights to Venus, not just for "Earth" but to acclaim Venus' throne as their own. FWC, Dead Orbit, Seven Seraphs, New Monarchy etc. all fighting "alongside" one another. But if Earth were to win, which faction will take the Golden Throne that is Venus?

        • I agree with you Than would cool I'm thinking in a similar way as warframe does, obviously much we'll thought and less repetitive, but you get alert missions now and then and several events and story missions throughout the month.

        • A lot of people are talking about large scale wars. I think this is a great idea. I believe the best way to implement this is to have a "military campaign" every month. For example: The Cabal are staging a large invasion in (somewhere). Then you could take part of some of many smaller operations that are part of the defense. Then, next month: We are planning a large invasion against the Vex. Some fire-teams will have to take different objectives or areas. This combines large scale wars with a changing world. • Everything sounds awesome, except for the implications around having a player economy. Those who played Diablo 3 will know what I mean behind the chaos that was the auction/free market. Players started playing the game to farm specific rare items to sell and make money off of instead of enjoying the game. That said, I believe the problem could be curved by limiting certain weapons to only allowing the one who found/picked up the weapon to wield it (like a super-rare weapon). That or level-locking weapons so that weapons can only be bought by a certain level player (say Lvl 42 SMG can only be bought/wielded by Lvl 42+ guardians). This could be flawed, Idk, what do you guys think?

                • These are all important elements. Hope bungie has a gameplan for all this. One thing I'm interested in seeing is the locations changing factions. Lets say the fallen have control of a part of mars. The cabal come in and start taking it back. The players can go and observe. A good mission for this situation would be to sow chaos among the factions. Gi and make sure neither faction gains the upper hand. Also if they start to make peace, a player can take over, oh lets say an artillery position and shell the other faction, restarting hostilities. If it doesn't become that immersive, at least some areas should change faction every now and then. As players regain the lost worlds, sometimes they have to defend locations against MASSIVE invasions. Imagine 40+ players bunkering down on the wall holding back and army of fallen one week, cabal the next.

                • I would love for Destiny to have all these features. You also have to consider that if they haven't already started implementing features like these they will either update it with DLC or just an update. Or they will delay the game until they can. Or worst of all not implement some to none of these things at all D: Also I'd like to suggest another feature. Space Battles Say you just left Earths atmosphere and were on your way to Venus. All of a sudden you fly right into a giant battle between X enemies or allies and Y enemy, so you join the fight. I know it sounds like a really simple idea but it could be more complex. Such as each enemies ships have different builds i.e. You need to take down X enemy's ship by taking out its power supply in the middle while Y enemy's power supply is in the rear. Or perhaps even other way's like boarding the ship and cutting off the life support, while letting you take possession of the their ship but you need to turn on your own life support in your suit or face death. I don't know what do you guys think. I suppose just stumbling upon a large battle would fit into the whole Emergent Events category, but I still think it would be cool.

                    • Something That I would Realy like to see is a resource based economy, where each player has needs, and a enemy that is strategicly realistic. for example, I am a hunter, kind of a solo dude who is out exploring the wilderness, well today I need some food, and i do not want to buy it, so I go hunting, to do that I have to leave the city, but the bad guys are out there, now they are going to have centralized "bases" and patrols, but the farther you are from a base the less patrols there are going to be. also the farther from the city you are the less partrols there are going to be, no point in patrolling empty wilderness far from anything of strategic value right? on this expedition I am away from any resources, so i cannot stay our here indefinantly, I need food and water. so its not like I can hang out here forever, I need to find resorces in the wilderness (shouldn't be much problem because I am a hunter) or eventualy I must return to base to get food. today I get lucky, I get out of my portable house that springs out of my uber high-tech hand device. and see a gaint fallen stading there, well I being extremly over confident shoot at it's feet yelling "dance fool dance!!" eventualy though I get tired of my games and kill it. now I have food (fallen are actualy a rare delicasy in this world, SUPRISE!) and scavenge (weapons armor, suplies) now I can use this food and scavenge to extend my stay in the wilderness or I can return to the city to sell it. Thats exactly what I want my game experience to be like, total freedom

                    • scripted weather events can be okay but can also be boring. if we know whats going to happen a week or a month in advance then when it come's it's like 'meh'. One of the main things that bungie is aiming towards is making it so even they can't control (some of) the event's that happen in the game. so when it does happen it s like 'wow, i dident see that coming!'. that been said there will be cripted events chucked in there as well.
