Why do people find government-operated inside jobs so ridiculous?

Why do people think that the U.S. government would never stage an attack or tragedy of any kind? The U.S. government already has bloody hands. So what is stopping them from staging a tragedy like that in order to further their regime? As long as they don't get caught, they won't get any flak from the people and can use the aftermath of the tragedy to their advantage. Anyone who tries to expose the truth regarding such an event will either be considered a lunatic conspiracy theorist by the general public or will be silenced by the government. The government can do anything to get what they want as long as they don't get caught and their higher ups are willing. So why is it that so many people think that the government would never do such a thing? Why do people think that a government-staged tragedy is such a taboo? They have already done terrible things. The government is not the pure and just operation that many people think it is. Human life isn't as important to the government as most people think. I am not saying the recent shootings in the U.S. are staged. I am not saying that 9.1.1 was an inside job. I am not saying all conspiracy theorists are telling the truth. I am just saying that the government is very capable and could very much be willing to do such things and thinking that they would stage a tragedy of any kind should not be such a taboo.

I wouldn't say that they necessarily would not stage a false flag operation, but "wouldn't do it in any particular circumstance" isn't the same as "wouldn't do it in this particular circumstance". I don't see how support or international justification for an invasion of Afghanistan is nearly enough of an incentive to commit terrorist attacks of such a magnitude. In fact, I don't even see how it could be an incentive without an already established threat of terrorism on that scale, which is exactly what the attack demonstrated. So, would the American government kill American citizens if it stood to benefit greatly from the aftermath? Sure, I can believe that would be possible. Would they kill scores of American citizens (and take on all of the risks to exposure that must surely come with amplifying a false flag op by such a magnitude) just to be able to prevent people from potentially killing (probably fewer) scores of American citizens in the future? No.
