Destiny NEEDS an "M" rating
I know that often times, developers and gamers alike don't really care what the rating on a game is, but from what I've heard (all speculation of course), is that Bungie is aiming for a "T" rating for Destiny.
If this is the case, which I hope it isn't, it will be a huge mistake. The story for what Destiny is claiming to be, cannot be done justice if Bungie doesn't allow for the grit, violence, language, etc that would come with that setting, it can't be believable.
If the world is almost completely wiped out, and the human race is having to fight several other species in a last ditch effort to survive, you better bet that there will be "F bombs" dropped, there will be people being shot (meaning decent amounts of blood), etc.
Bungie, please, don't let yourselves be held back by a rating in order to get more sales. Make this game an "M" rated game. Anything less would be simply uncompelling and unbelievable, and would really detract from the story and mood that would be present should this situation in this game ever really happen.

Edited by Prototape: 3/21/2013 8:31:48 AMThis isn't a steroid fueled shooter like Gears of War. Destiny appears to have more class. A dark story can be told without an excess of swear words and gratuitous violence; such cases are just so anomalous that it seems a bit awkward when one comes along.

I find it odd how you think a gaming company makes it's game around a predefined rating. It baffles me even more to think you would even QUESTION Bungie on whether or not they are .....limiting themselves...*shudders* Bungie is known for pleasing it's masses. I don't doubt this game will be spectacular no matter how far in the Alphabet it gets.

If something is rated T it doesnt mean it wont have blood, and cursing for example mercenaries 2, and Uncharted 3(even ironman has cursin you idiot)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 RepliesGod knows that there doesn't exist a single good story without blood and f-bombs. It's one thing to say that Bungie shouldn't let ESRB rating goals interfere with their vision for the game, but saying that Destiny "NEEDS" an M rating is silly.

1 ReplyDestiny is supposed to be "Hopeful and Inviting". Just because humanity is almost lost, doesn't mean we'll turn into mouthy pirates. In fact, one might argue that after such an event, the survivors would be joined in a common bond of support and brotherhood. This could easily lower hostility, as each of us rely more heavily on each other. But if you still find it unrealistic, remember, it's mythic-sci fi, it doesn't have to be realistic.

Would a more "mature" game be great? Sure. Does it NEED to be? Not in the slightest. Also, I don't think Chad Armstrong would appreciate you impersonating him.

I agree with OP in that I'd like to see a serious game with mature themes. I'm not going to say it "needs" and M-rating, but I feel like this kind of a story lends itself towards maturity. I'd like to see, within the ruins of Earth and Mars, a few disturbing scenes that really give you a feel for the struggle that the people of this universe have went through.

The Halo franchise is rated M but I can't remember the last time an F-bomb or shizz was yelled from my TV speakers and yet Halo is one of the highest selling and beloved video games brands.

You need to edit this because in the first few seconds of the character trailer it says the game is anticipated to be rated mature.

One thing you have to realize is that children play M rated games no matter what. I think it is about time that the ages for the rating were revised to fit a more appropriate demographic. The youth see much more than their elders did at their age and we can't change that.

Quite the opposite, actually; it takes a lot to earn a T rating when trying to create a realistic, immersive world with a dark side. Just to note: there are a lot of companies out there that do aim toward a specific rating when developing a game. It's not usually up to the developers or designers, but the head honchos and sometimes even the publisher.

As if a lower rating is going to gain the game any more sales. I've never heard of these T-rated suspicions before now, but I severely hope they are wrong. Science fiction is all about existentialism and fear and other deep emotions, I don't want to see "space zombies" that [i]don't[/i] scare the shit out of me.
