...in ways which will obviously result in people disliking that person? Wouldn't it be better and easier to pander to public opinion so as to be well-liked and popular at the same time? Popularity and being well-liked always has better perks than infamy and the general animosity of society.
I figured this an appropriate question to ask in light of recent.... events? If you can call them that.

Because they don't think of the long-term effects, they think of the short-term ones. That momentary instance of admiration from others is more valuable to the feeble-minded than sincerity and honesty that will benefit them significantly more in the future.
