Destiny and Halo: A question regarding reception.

Now that the day is winding down, I've had plenty of time to reflect on how I feel about Destiny, as well as taking in the opinions of people outside of Bungie.net. I love the ideas behind Destiny. They are exactly what I was hoping for ever since Bungie had asked what would happen if we had a world that was always there for us. I can't wait to see more. I know a lot of people here are very excited, as well. Browsing outside of Bungie, however, I feel like we're in the minority. The overall reception to Destiny has been lukewarm at best. I understand some of the complaints and worries that some people have raised, but to me, I feel like Destiny is sort of the next step in what a console game can do and what it can give to players. Part of me thinks the criticisms being leveled are a knee-jerk reaction to a change in the status-quo. Which made me wonder: what was the initial reception like for Halo: Combat Evolved? I believe I'm correct in saying that at that time shooters were still primarily PC-based, and though there were some successful console shooters prior to Halo, the FPS genre was generally considered PC territory and that only. And yet Halo was a major player in making shooters on console common and popular. I can't possibly know the reaction to it though as I was only 7 years old at the time. Did people like the ideas of Halo right away? Or was it like we saw today with Destiny, met with extreme skepticism?

  • I know that my friend's 20-something year old cousin that 10 year old me first played it with about a month after release was telling me it was "completely different and going to change everything". Now I find myself in his shoes. That's all my firsthand knowledge of academia's view of it. With my age group I remember it was about half and half, a lot of kids weren't all that into it because it wasn't fun enough or something? Giving me a break, the rest of us couldn't get enough of it. My friends and I were still playing campaign and multiplayer into the days of Halo 3.

Said that it was never going to catch on, nothing could compare to WASD-Mouse, and that it was for "Console Kiddies" or "the Mario players". Then, people in college and other places discovered easy to configure and arrange (for the time) LAN parties that didn't require desks, tons of power, and a degree in networking to arrange. Setup was easier than splitting the cost of pizza. And the "FPS from 8 feet while sitting on a couch with your budz" finally went mainstream. Then Halo 2 came out and the hardcore Halo:CE fans shit. Many of them hated it and didn't want/like the changes. But it was MM that made it into a monster. Then Halo 3 on the 360 and a matured XBL experience. 3 times at bat, and each time they (Bungie) hit what they were "swinging for" but not everyone understood or agreed what the target should have been. For me, I have immense faith in Jones. He's been focused on this for quite a while (having handed off trustee-ship of Halo way back) and when he says "for your inner 7-year old", this 48 year old who was 30 when he played his first Bungie game gets goosebumps (I blame MY inner 7-year old). I am interested, eager, curious but far too old to get hyped (it's not good for my blood pressure). When I heard that MS had acquired Bungie so they could make a release title for their new console? I preordered an Xbox/CE bundle that very day. I feel a similar and familiar sensation now.

      • I know to some people, Halo CE was considered a hard game. Why I havent the foggiest. I see where you are coming from with Destinys reception, It kind of bothers me that most people these days have little faith in gaming, like they have this core idea that gaming should be "this way" and only this way. With Destiny Ive seen everything from it being a ripoff of Killzone artstyle to it being called a Borderlands copy. Which seriously bothers me, I for one believe its going to be what Ive wanted in an fps. Its just to me lately people think that everything has to be new and fresh, its hard when just about everything sci fi has been done. They just dont seem to see that some things may look similar...

        • Halo CE was greeted with a lot of skepticism. A lot FPS games were primarily on the PC, so when people heard about Halo CE- they laughed. However it surprised a large majority of gamers. The core concepts were great and the easy to set-up nature made it attractive to many gamers.
