Same sex marriage legalisation approved in England and Wales

This is one step forward. Now it's just Scotland left.
The Commons voted in favour of the The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, by 400 to 175, a majority of 225, at the end of a full day's debate on the bill. Prime Minister David Cameron has described the move as "an important step forward" that strengthens society.
For once, something right has happened. EDIT: It needs to go through the House of Lords now..

  • Good. I don't know why it has taken this long for people to realize they can't force their religious/moral/political beliefs on everyone. I'll admit, I don't believe gay marriage should be practiced in Christianity because of quotes like in Leviticus 18:22 ("You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination."). However, living in Canada, and respecting the beliefs of others, who am I to say no? I can't dictate what they believe and forcing my beliefs on them doesn't do anyone any good. Now, if we could just get our neighbors in the USA to understand they aren't a christian nation anymore and they have no right to force traditional marriage on anyone.

Good. So glad to see people are sensible. To Americans who disagree with same sex marriage; Do you support the Constitution? Would you consider yourself a defender of the Constitution? Would you risk your life to defend the constitution? If you answered yes, you are now a supporter of gay marriage. - In Loving V Virginia, the Supreme Court determined that marriage is a fundamental right. - and under the 14th amendment, all citizens are guaranteed equal protection under the law. If marriage is a fundamental right, and you deny a specific group of people their right to marry, that violates Equal Protection and is unconstitutional. Banning gay marriage is unconstitutional. "But they have civil unions, that's good enough! It's basically equal to marriage, just seperate!" Nope. See Supreme Court in Brown V Board of Education. "Separate but Equal" still violates Equal Protection. If you support the constitution, you support gay marriage.

      • Heard about it on the news this morning. I really hope that this goes through and gay marriage is finally legalised. I'm not gay, but I'm not stupid. Therefor, I realise that being gay is something you just are or aren't and it doesn't affect what type of person you are. They deserve every right that we have!

      • So does that mean its now definitely legal there or does it need Scotland for it to be legal in all 3?

              • the argument of gay marriage is mostly pretty stupid. i think gays should be allowed to get "married" but at the same time don't. it's more a problem of definition. Marriage came from the church, not government. marriage is the union between a man and a woman. It is literally the dictionary definition. that's what it has been and that's what it's supposed to be. The only thing gays can or really should be arguing for is similar rights when they enter a union. it's stupid just to say OMG IT'S UNFAIR or complain the church doesn't accept you. it's against their religious beliefs to support you. you are essentially telling them you should not believe this or argue that their views are retarded but it's not you're right to impose your moral code on others.

What's so bad that two people COMPLETELY SEPARATE OF YOUR LIFE marrying? It's the equivalent of being against gays being allowed to live in a house with a blue room. It doesn't affect you. If it was legalised, would it ruin YOUR room? Would it change YOUR room? Of course not, and to think people marrying will effect your marriage in any way, then you're quite the idiot.

                          > don't care Like, seriously. This is the one issue I don't give a flying -blam!- about. I think that we could potentially make a compromise to fit the needs of both sides (liberals: civill unions with equal benefits; conservatives: retain the definition of 'marriage'). But nah, both sides think that compromising on this issue is too big of a deal. So whatever, poopheads

Thats cool if you Europeans want to allow gay marriage, but dont you dare tell us Americans how to run our country. If we dont want gays to marry so be it, and stay out of our 2nd amendment too. I'm looking at you Piers Morgan.
