I don't think the government should be in the business of issuing "marriage licenses" because the only real issue here is the word marriage. If we just made it so the government issued a license with a different name for everyone most religious people would go along with it.(I've actually asked quite a few I know and only one objected). A straight religious couple can still have their marriage ceremony in a church and same-sex couples can have equal rights. Problem solved, move on to bigger issues.
