The American College of Cardiologist (ACC) recently did a study that showed there was no difference in the benefit for Cardiac health of what kind of alcohol you drank. Moderate use (1-2 drinks per day for men and 1 drink a day for women) showed a reduced number of LDL (bad cholesterol), reduced triglycerides, and an increase of HDL (Good Cholesterol). Now on the flip side, heavy drinking will cause just the opposite, an increase number of LDL (bad cholesterol), an increase triglycerides, and reduced number of HDL (Good Cholesterol). This is because the liver has two different methods of neutralizing alcohol, at lose doses (moderate drinking) the liver used the ADH pathway which causes almost no damage to hepatocyes and does not change liver function. High does causes the liver to use a pathway called microsomal ethanol oxidizing system (MEOS). This pathway causes a lot of inflammation in the liver and damages hepatocyes, so that they cannot do their job correctly, and if you haven’t guessed by now one of their jobs is cholesterol regulation. The buzz about red wine is not only is it good for cardiac health, but it has also been shown (by case controlled studies ) to reduce the risk of cancer. This is probably due to the high level of Polyphenols, which is an antioxidant. Also you won't win this argument, I'm a doctor. Granted, but you cause the world to impolde. I wish for cheap gas.
