I've lost twenty pounds since Christmas Day (Update)

I've been told multiple times that I don't look my weight, but still, I nearly shat myself when I stepped on a scale on Christmas Day to find that I weighed a whopping 268. I knew I had packed on the weight since my son was born, but jesus, fifty pounds? So I got serious about getting back in shape. I've attempted to start a diet and exercise routine several times since I've gotten heavy, but it's ever only lasted a few days at a time. It's been over a month now, and I think I've finally made it a habit. I try to take in less than 2000 calories a day, some days even coming in with a net calorie intake of ~1000, but usually only when I exercise that day. I downloaded a popular fitness app on my phone that's been great in helping me keep tabs on this kind of stuff. It has you set a weight loss goal and uses that plus your age, height, and weight to determine how many calories to consume a day to achieve that goal. It also has a large database of foods and nutrition facts and such, and you just plug them in to determine what and how much you can eat daily. I've consistently ran every other day for the past month. I started off at only a few miles each time, but I'm averaging around five miles every other day now, sometimes breaking six. I haven't had fast food in a month, and the last soda I drank was roughly three weeks ago, so I think that's had a huge impact on my progress. Physically, the running has gotten easier, and I've gotten several remarks about my face looking thinner. I brought what I could of my old weight set from my mom's house to my house, just dumbbells. I haven't been lifting very much, but I have a quick ten minute routine I do with the dumbbells in the morning on most days; my arms and shoulders seem to be gaining some definition again. Anyway, yesterday was my off day and I weighed in at 248. My overall goal is to at least get down to the 205-215 range, and at best break 200. This has all been a big shock to me, but for more than the obvious reasons. Even back when I was in shape, it was never about losing weight or slimming down. I played college football, so the goal was always to bulk up. Since I was in the weight room three hours a day anyway, I could essentially eat what I wanted and not suffer any significant consequences. Right now, I just want all my damn old jeans to fit. I'm posting this here because Amanda seems a bit played out on my diet talk, and I feel a bit self conscious bringing it up to anyone else, especially if I fall off the horse and into my old eating habits. I saw Meech mention in another thread that he had lost ~70 pounds over a period of time, so I guess it kind of inspired me to share my current situation and goals. Anyone here have any fitness-related stories they'd like to share?

Somewhat health related, I'm trying to quit smoking. I don't smoke anymore but I choose to use the term "trying" anyway since I'd still love to have one from time to time. Here's what i don't get, tobacco companies are not allowed to have their own commercials on tele (over here, don't know about the rest of the world) but it's perfectly fine for all the quit-smoking companies to run their ads. It's freaking impossible to not think about smoking when every other commercial is about cigarette substitutes.
