The US is a Joke, some ally

It backs Japans claim to the islands that China claims are theirs, yet when it comes to the Falklands the US practically backs Argentina's claim. What an ally, is Britain not important enough for you Washington?? The Japanese want the US military out of their country and the US is dragging their heels.

  • This situation is simply being used by the Argentine leadership to draw attention away from the mess they have left Argentina in. Argentina has no claims to the island and would never be able to take them. Although I do agree the time has come to start cutting ties with the U.S. They just use our military for their owns gains and would abandon Britain in a heartbeat.
U.S. Position on the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands Taken Question Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC Question Taken at the January 19, 2012 Daily Press Briefing January 20, 2012 QUESTION: Does the U.S. take a position on the recent posturing between the United Kingdom and Argentina over the Falklands? ANSWER: This is a bilateral issue that needs to be worked out directly between the governments of Argentina and the United Kingdom. We encourage both parties to resolve their differences through dialogue in normal diplomatic channels. We recognize de facto United Kingdom administration of the islands but take no position regarding sovereignty.
Sounds about as neutral and indecisive as possible. Pretty standard Pres. Obama.

Maybe you (Britain) should let the Argentinians have their land back.

            • While I personally disagree with Washington or the Administration distancing itself and not backing GB on the Falklands, I am willing to be that when comparing the two, their "reasoning" is something along these lines. Japan compared to China is going to have a hard time asserting themselves, especially militarily. If we show our support, perhaps that will help to calm the Chinese down from their wound-up state and get them to discuss the matter more rationally. -vs- There are people who have lived for generations on the Falklands and they are clear as to which claimant they are linked. The issue is being ramped up and over-emotionalized by the Argentinians, but if two super-powers come in and say "STFU" that only further encourages and enraged the Argentinians who are feeling like the "little guy who is being bullied". Now, I don't agree with the second position, I personally believe that our statement as a nation should be "This was sorted out before, we understand that it is an emotional issues for Argentinian politics, but the furor being made is meant to distract the population from internal issues, much like the Chinese/Japanese conflict over some sandbars/rocks that are little more than navigational hazards. The Falklands "belong" to the people who live there, not to the nearest mainland nation. If that were so, England would belong to France. We know how well that idea worked."

Damn, looks like this thread managed to break the time-space continuum and send me back to 1982, when the Falklands were an issue.
