Review manipulation is a new low

Now before the Bungie defenders fly in with their white capes, yes I know they simply asked them to hold off on reviews. Things is game journalists will listen because they are afraid of losing access to info. A game should be reviewed for what’s on offer at release not a month down the road. It’s manipulative and unfair to other game devs. How many games would have had a better review if they had a month to add and fix stuff first ? Personally I think it’s hilarious, reviews from critics are normally bs anyway. Take IGN for example, if they give a game a high score I usually expect the opposite, if they attack a game or ignore it completely it’s usually really good. Bungie is making themselves look pathetic and desperate, maybe they shouldn’t have ignored their D2 play base for yrs or destroyed D2 with the portal that was clearly made to make the game easier to manage with a skeleton crew.

    • The writing is on the wall. A indie studio with 10-12 employees can make better game over AAA plus 300 employees and huge budget can’t make a good game from the get go. It’s funny the amount of delusional people thinking this game it’s next best thing😂.

        • My opinion is that if a game is ready to be sold to people then it’s ready to be reviewed. If positive or negative changes are made afterwards then it’s reasonable to revisit the review, should the reviewer have the time to do so.

          • It's wild. They could not delay the release again, and they could not finish the game in time. So they release it anyway and tell everyone not to judge what you paid for. How about get your act together and behave like a multi-billion dollar studio. I'll let myself out, bye Bungie, you were once great.

          • Fully agree. Even if they just asked nicely it’s still shady practice. Especially when at the same time they are paying top influencers to promote the game. But I guess it’s ok to disrespect your customers these days.

          • Agreed. That's how every other game has been judged, Bungie does not get to tell everyone to wait for them to fix an incomplete product. If it launched with content missing, that's their fault. We're past the era of live service games launching lackluster only to slowly work it's way to a halfway decent game.

            • They want people to actually play the game instead of leaning on what other people have to say. Good on then

              • I’m not a Bungie defender but I don’t think this is a big deal. Gaming has changed and live service games always need review in progress. Destiny had it, Diablo, etc. Why does delaying the review matter? Players waiting to see if it reviews well have longer to decide and those who don’t want the game to do well can just track the engagement numbers and retention anyway. Bad reviews aren’t going to kill this game. Low player base will dot that and after the paid streamers drop off, it’s only going to be the Destiny ones left. Games goes free on ps plus or closes within a year.

                • Bungie have requested this; it isn't mandatory. For comparison, Destiny 1 wasn't reviewed great, until VOG landed. Marathon still has the end game map to come. Marathon is not Destiny, it plays differently, slower and more jeopardy. If anyone goes in and tries to play like COD or Destiny, they will have a bad time of it. Extraction shooters aren't my thing, but i am playing Marathon and having a great time. The more time you put in, the better it gets. There is a point where it 'clicks'. Also good to remember; It's not your gun, it's just your time with the gun. Once you get past 'losing gear fear' it's an engaging, thinking, game. The AI are no joke.

Remember when everyone reviewed D1 before VoG? Remember all the memes? Especially about the length of its then vanilla campaign, the ones quoting the then “Exo Stranger”, about no time to explain? About getting a blue as a reward for a campaign? How little content there truly was— and how many people felt that was some great eternal flaw of the game? I think we are maybe giving too much weight to terminally online discourse. Everybody pretends to have liked D1 all along. And that simply is not true. Most didn’t— our most outspoken and shortsighted especially, did not. I know we all supposedly hate Marathon here? But there’s something about the pot insulting the kettle for its char at play in the disaffection and hurt.

                    • You really take truck with Bungie asking people to hold off a bit on reviews when it's such a common practice for people to review-bomb movies, tv shows and games before they've even seen them? Hell, people on here have done so for years the moment any information about an expansion is released. And before any of the low-brows chip in with their "BDF" nonsense, this is a known fact and anyone who tries to deny it are liars.

                      • Not defending Bungie here. Maybe they wanted players to get hands-on feel for it before the reviews came in. (Minus the beta)

                        • Bungie has to try and tip the odds because they play with such a weak hand. Reviews, sales, awards, bad decisions / publicity they can try to pin on "Former" employees anything but wear the long pants and take responsibility.

                        • Are reviewer(s) who are paid to review a game made public or do they have to sign an NDA or something? I’m genuinely curious.

                          • They really think people are going to have marathon become the destiny 1 lightning again when its far from the case. And lets be real D1 pre taken king was average at best and only became a full game once it came out. Ya know cause it was cut out and repurposed in the first place 😂
