Destiny 2 and Marathon and Me

It’s the sad funny that after giving the Marathon beta a try I also lost interest in Destiny 2. Marathon didn’t scratch any gaming “needs” so, unless a bunch of friends play, I will likely pass on it. But, Marathon, made me realize that I am exhausted on Destiny 2. Exhausted in the sense that it’s an old game that is tired. The way the game looks and plays, the methodology of encounters, how even in new content the game is already solved. This feeling of repetitive gameplay makes even endgame content unattractive to even bother with outside of a shrug and “maybe that could be cool.” Marathon plays like Destiny, the basic mechanics of movement and gunplay, but was in a new form. The gathering of parts and items (admittedly an integral part of extraction shooters) changed the methodology of a Bungie game. While the extraction shooter design isn’t actually for me the complexity of design and upgrading was refreshing. I’ll admit, I immediately dreamed of what a Destiny 3 future could feel like; one with complexity and depth. One where a Guardian was in a world where they were constructing their weapons on the fly. Rarity drops no longer being so static in perks. Who knows what the future holds, if Bungie as a studio still exists in the coming years. I don’t know, but Marathon taught me that Destiny 2 is tired and old and if it does have any future the franchise has to reinvent itself into something greater than it has currently stagnated. Curious if anyone else feels or felt that way after Marathon or even before with Destiny 2 in general?

    • Pretty spot on. Dumping more funds into a downward spiriling game isn't going to save it; as it's just more of the same Destiny 2; just a new coat of paint.

      • I started working on other backlogs of games as well as some on monthly games/ game pass. Just finished Wo Long main story mission not long ago. I feel too bored of d2, only got on to collect some bright dust just so I can buy stuffs at Eververse with it. Now we got another 3 months of total drought which means more games to play with other than d2.

            • To people who've played Destiny for years the content is dated and old, but that's not necessarily true for new players. Destiny has a lot of good things, but it does need some TLC if it's going to attract and keep new players. Destiny has been living off it's reputation and has neglected the new player experience. The portal streamlines things but I wouldn't call it a win for new players. The Portal concept has some good elements for navigation but falls flat as far as engaging or being cohesivene. It's like the WaWa of Destiny, a quickie mart. Bungie really needs to listen to all player feedback. There are improvements we've asked for that Bungie just refuses to give us. Destiny can be great again if Bungie will just get out of it's own way. Marathon is the current niche. Everyone chases the new shiny ball. Destiny is time tested, it has elements that work. Marathon is a dice roll. It is not the new Destiny.

              • I've been playing less destiny, I've not touched marathon but I've been falling off, playing less & less to the stage were i can't play for longer than about 40 mins & I'm bored rigid - I nearly always find bugs, broken quests, things not working, or I'll run strikes & get the same 1 4 times in a row, or 5-6 battlegrounds I hate & leave, over & over so I just log off. If I'm falling off, genuinely, most others are too. I've played daily for 12 years give or take, I'd play early morning till late evening on & off around house jobs, now I do 45 mins top in the morning & I'm off all day. I only get the urge to hop on if I get a vex incursion notification & that feels forced. If there is anything else coming, way I feel, I might not even buy it. Sad

                  • I hate PvP, and am totally useless at it. However....... Marathon has me hooked. I bought it yesterday. You are right though. I jumped back into Destiny last night, and yes, it feels very dated now. It's not just that there's nothing to do, like you say, as a game, it's solved. Shame.

                    • I dont know every new dungeon and raid innovates and has something new. EDP being the prime example the final boss rewinding itself and bringing back all the other bosses as failed experiments was amazing. Maybe youre just tired of the game. While they've been lacking in other places, story, raid, and dungeon have all always been home runs.
