Bungie, it’s okay to tell us to F-off once in a while…
Let me start with a few caveats. I’ve never been a fan of gate-keeping or elitism. I want everyone to feel like their time is rewarded and I want the game to have content for every type of gamer—whether you’re a casual who plays to de-stress, an end-game monster, a Gambit main, or PvP “try hard.”
With all that being said, I don’t think that this event was an elitist’s wet dream as some have suggested. This event ramped up rewards for everyone for merely participating and the [i]only[/i] items locked behind skill were a few minor cosmetics. Yes, there were a lot of bugs and the point system could certainly have been executed better but this was a good event for those with a competitive spirit.
It’s okay to have those. It’s okay to tell the community, “there’s nothing wrong with rewarding high-skilled players once in a while.” No, not [i]everything[/i] should be a sweaty grind. Most of the game should be fun and welcoming for all most of the time. Conversely, you can’t make everything a pillow fight and you can’t always give in to everyone’s whining. It’s okay to tell us, “For just one event, get good! It’s just a damn helmet! You’ll get over it!”
Sincerely, someone who predominantly plays casually and is NOT a “try hard.”

1 ReplyCompetitive spirit is great. But adding a 15% bonus to scores for only the rewards pass holders on a free update kinda Pay to Win if you ask me. I like the idea of a ranking competition but It needs to be on a level playing field, skill should the focus.

A good online game developer should only award competitions with titles/emblems/achievevements, not exclusive cosmetics/gear/mounts/pets/etc. Disagree? Then you're part of the problem and no cleverly worded alternative facts counterargument or trash talking will change that.

3 RepliesAt this point they should just give everyone the helmet regardless of score. Tired of seeing all these entitled children crying cause they can’t get something in a video game 😂 I can’t imagine any of these players being gamers in the early 2000s.

1 ReplyIf you want an event to be competitive it needs to be based on SKILL ALONE. -Having a prerequisite to be 550 to get the highest score is not an expression of skill. -Waiting for a run with the best side objective and an HVT spawn are not expressions of skill -Overcorrecting point one and accidentally punishing players that are 550 with lower scores than players that aren't is not competitive. Changes needed to be made to the initial event for it to actually be competitive. And the changes eventually made caused more issues that were just as uncompetitive to crop up. The most recent round of changes were absolutely needed.

Except they already have a reward for high skilled players. They're the Contest Emblems. Don't believe me? Why is it that after Contest Root, every Contest Raid and even Dungeon has become too difficult for anyone outside those high end players? Convenient that it would happen after Contest Root, the one where the most amount of high skilled players complained about the number of clears. Proof that even high skilled players aren't afraid to complain until they get what they want.

They could have just added leaderboards and not called it an event. No new activity, no new weapons, and the only new modifier was scraped.

1 ReplyAgree, I’m a casual, with a bit more time to play lately and I got god rolls for a few weapons I was missing, and the helmet. I might even attempt the emblem. The bugs and the cheaters really sucked but otherwise as you said the top reward are purely cosmetic which is good.

1 ReplyBeen saying they should've told the community that from the beginning of the franchise lol. It's ok to acknowledge real feedback, but once they showed they would give in to the loudest complainer, it was over. The different community sections got loud, bungie lost the direction of their game, and have been trying to correct it since. With that said, they've done a damn good job with the game, and I still enjoy it.

9 RepliesAs a casual, I've gotten a -blam!- ton of new gear from this event, I'm pretty happy with that. And I got a top ten percent score in Salt Mines, which I'm perhaps more proud of than I ought to be. I can't say I've minded the event, and it's been cool watching the Esoterickks of the world doing their 1% runs. I'll survive without the new hat, it doesn't match any of my fashion loadouts anyway. 😅
