Last week, we announced that Unstable Cores would not reset with the launch of Destiny 2: Renegades on December 2, 2025. We noted in the TWID that we would provide future updates on how we would rebalance the economy of this currency.
We have landed on a plan to fully deprecate this currency. Once deprecated, infusion will cost an amount of Enhancement Cores and Glimmer.
Overall, we've found that Unstable Cores have been too restrictive across power levels and fail to drive interesting buildcraft decisions, whether they be powering up through Campaign missions and wanting to try different weapons, or going into Endgame content and looking to infuse lower-level gear to higher power levels.
We don't have an exact patch for this change just yet but are working rapidly to align on a target date. In the short term, we have two items of note shipping tomorrow with Destiny 2 Update 9.1.5.1.
Our goal is to help players with smaller amounts of unstable cores infuse gear alongside Power and Progression changes going live tomorrow until the currency can be retired:
- We have added a one-time reward of 777,777 Unstable Cores to the catch-up chest that will be available in the Tower tomorrow at reset. We highly recommend signing in and using these before they're removed!
- We are shipping a minor change that reduces the number of Unstable Cores needed for infusion at higher power levels until they are deprecated.
We will provide additional updates when available.
Leave it to Bungie to replace a functioning system (Upgrade Modules) with a barely functional copy (Unstable Cores) just to find out that the new system that had no reason to exist beyond punishing veteran players is so punishing that it ruins the new player experience more and has to be itself removed. I have no idea why Bungie thinks it has to reinvent the wheel all the time and keeps trying to put in new currency grinds every other update, but man, I wish they'd stop and stick with what we already have. Considering we have always had Glimmer, Enhancement Cores, Prisms, and Ascendant Shards, we really didn't even need Modules (and they made the most sense to have back then). So many things in this game exist to bottleneck and slow down player progression that it's crazy. Even simple things like currency were being used to artificially increase the time it took to be "ready" for higher level content or even try out a new build.

This stupid system was created just to jack up playtime even further without having to create new content. Removal is a step in the right direction. Now deprecate portal (or at least leave it as a quick play activity) but revert focus on director and the seasonal campaigns and activities. In short, revert most of the changes post final shape, apologise to the remaining player base and hope they give you another chance.

"An amount of enhancement cores" plural... The core drop rate will be increased to accommodate this change, right? I'm only surviving on stockpiles, I hate to think how the five new players are coping. -
Upgrade modules died so unstable cores could die too.

I already have 999,999 unstable cores, I don't infuse my entire vault everytime I gained a level, it wasn't a big deal if you actually played the game, but its whatever, I don't care if you remove them I will take a Shiny Heal Clip/Chaos Reshaped Yeartide Apex that I didn't get grinding 12 hours a day for 2 weeks during Solstice, instead of the free cores please -
The only people crying about cores are the ones who insist on infusing every single piece of trash in their vault up to level. With the amount of gear there is to dismantle, it's literally impossible to run out of cores if you're actually playing the game. Now, they'll be removed and we'll go back to a worse system with no way to stay stocked on enhancement cores. Nice work everyone

Oh. 777,777 Cores? You're adorable Bungie.

Unstable Cores are super unforgiving, so this seems like a great change to me! I hope that we'll be getting Enhancement Cores for dismantling loot, otherwise we'll be back to just glimmer, which is kind of unexciting, but that's a different problem. Between the catch-up gear set, the 777,000 Unstable Cores, the changes to the Portal, and the faster leveling process, Bungie seems to be really trying to get players back into the game. I'm eager to see how things feel after tomorrow's patch.

Cool with those stable cores I’ll be able to upgrade like 3 weapons (exaggerating) before they’re all gone :)

Edited by Zodleon: 10/14/2025 9:49:56 AMOk I just want to know what they think "interesting buildcraft decisions" are driven by a currency thats only purpose is to add "value" to breaking gear down, and throttle how fast/often you can infuse gear. Is stopping ppl from using gear because of a lack of currency buildcrafting?
