Any advice for a potential soon-to-be beginner? I’m thinking of starting as a black mage so advice on that job would also be appreciated.

Keep in mind the next expansion comes out in a few months, while it's unlikely to change your play style too much, it could happen.

Disregard combat. Embrace Triple Triad.

Dont go to the balmung server on the crystal data center, especially ul'dah there. Bad idea. For anyone reading, If you know you know.

Black Mage (BLM) is a turret that's heavily reliant on keeping your rotations up. It's a lot of fun but can also frustating as you can't cast and move in most situations so positioning is very important. Early on you won't need to move around too much if your tank is half decent so you should be fine. As you progress you'll need to dodge more but you'll get a few tools in your kit to help with that. You'll have two states, Astral Fire and Umbral Ice, which you'll need to manage swapping between. Astral Fire increases your damage but you'll regenerate no MP. Umbral Ice will regen MP but is weaker. Each state has three tiers with each tier granting a bigger buff to damage/MP regen respectively. Casting a spell of the opposite state you're in will cancel you out of it, meaning you'll need to start over. It's not a huge deal, but you won't be optimizing your damage. Like movement you'll unlock a few tricks to keep your stacks up as you level. Once you can, give Summoner (SMN) a try. It's another magic DPS but is far more mobile than BLM. It also levels with Scholar (SCH) so you'll be getting a DPS and healer for the price of one. SMN shares gear with BLM too, so you went need to be grinding for two sets if you check it out. Also, side note, people use the class abbreviations a lot so it helps to know 'em.

I don't mind it. Got pricey to keep renewing.

Edited by Speaker: 4/19/2024 2:46:13 PMBlack Mage is a fun job. I main'd monk and swapped between that and dancer a lot. Was planning to Max level all my classes at one point but got distracted after Endwalker. If you want Black Mage, start at the Thaumaturges guild in Uldah! You'll need to unlock the job at a higher level, but Thaumaturgist is the precursor class! Can't get to it without em. Also- any time you get an opportunity to do a class/job quest- do it! It sometimes unlocks new actions/moves :D Good luck and have fun in Eorzea! Edit: Also, don't discount Materia- I went my whole playtime without using it, and that was stupid because it gives little beneficial edges in fights.
