It always struck me as weird. But there are very formal instances where it's ok, like certain scientific studies and such, but women usually works just fine.
-
It’s big in military/police/medical.
-
If I ever meet someone who unironically says "female" instead of woman I'm going to go feral.

Hello, Thank you for the information, I will send a note to my superior to go back to calling that group of earthlings as “humans” for when we invade. Regards; -Zipalo G’Zorp of the Intergalactic Empire

Noted. Would you prefer "ineffable beings beyond comprehension," or "women?"

I only use that in specific circumstances, such as "I was served by a female cashier". But, duly noted.
-
I usually only use the term when referring to characters. Like, calling my female Clavat in FFCC a, well, female Clavat. And of course, it goes both ways, saying male Clavat, too. It definitely seems weird using either term when referring to actual people. Like I’d never go to a store and say I was helped by a female cashier.
-
Ok “XX”.
-
K then, Iron Male.

-
This just makes me want to do it even more.
-
Who’s calling you that to your face? I understand it’s use in certain contexts, but I get why you’d find it weird to be called that in person.
-
Will do, bamboozling being
-
Yes ma’am, will do.
-
As you wish, oh, fairest of maidens.
-
I tend to stick to satan borne hell spawn but yeah, females is kinda weird
