Why does controller aim move slower when looking up/down compared to left/right?

This has always bothered me, and I wonder if it is a major reason why aerial play has historically been so effective. It just doesn't make sense to me. And before you say anything, know that this occurs regardless of sensitivity settings. Vertical aim speed is ALWAYS slower than horizontal aim speed for controllers. Plenty of instances where something like a hunter will simply double jump straight up, and the jump speed is so fast that moving the aim stick up at max input simply is not enough to stay on target - especially while ADS because the reticle friction slows your aim speed even more. Feels bad. Is this one of the reasons some players wanted a nerf to aerial play in the first place? Because it certainly feels bad to be mechanically limited to be unable to look up fast enough to track vertical moving players with as fast as it can be now.

  • This is my personal opinion on it, yes I know there is no proof that this is why it is the way it is. Yes I know maybe you'd like to turn it off. No, I didn't say this was the best way. Covering my bases here, anyway. Aim acceleration. Typically you want more acceleration horizontally than you do vertically, otherwise it feels weird to look up and down since the range of movement is limited.

  • Don’t worry the only semi counter to controller aimbot was hard nerfed for the very reason that controller players struggle to look up

Alternative to other answers here Occasionally its just cause the thumbstick is dirty Open up your controller, give it a good clean and it should function as desired again Unless the small parts like trigger springs are worn out, those need replacing if so

    • So when you aim left or right where they normally are you don't accidentally aim over or below them

    • I think it’s because most shooters play with only the level playing field, and it makes that kind of aiming easier my making the less used axis harder to accidentally overshoot on. That’s a bad way of wording it but I’m bad at language anyway

    • Im pretty sure that's its just the norm for a lot of console fps. It feels pretty good tbh, but I grew up on console fps so that's probably why

    • This drives me nuts too. At least add a setting so players can adjust it. It also drives me nuts that the reticle slows down when you move over something in a menu. That should have a toggle setting.

I hate how the aim assist forces me to look down at ads when I’m floating above them.

    • Many other shooters do this and it annoys me so much.

    • I wish we had Apex or Overwatch level of aim Settings.

    • It something in the code itself. Which is why pvp players want us to be allowed to play in the air…and why Bungie is always trying to force us back to the ground, imo.

      • I think it helps with reticle placement. I had a few games that side stepped this handicap and I experienced the toilet bowl effect, when attempting to ADS and land shots.
