8. A Thousand Voices (FANFICTION =D)

Thora looks up to the Leviathan and the Traveler, aglow in a phosphorescent haze. He's doing it. Zavala is overcharging himself with Light, siphoning from the Traveler. This dream again? Ana and Mara fight through the Hive mercilessly as the Dark Guardians approach. Thora finds Ana and signals toward the creepy woman. In lockstep, they carry out their assault. Ana opens fire on a Hunter while Thora covers her, blasting a flanking Ogre with Stasis. Ana drops a grenade under its massive feet, and a second later, it's dust. The creepy woman spots them, and Thora swears she's smiling. From behind the Keep, a full brigade of the Awoken armada rises, perverted with Hive thorns and insignia. As the Awoken defectors fire onto the battlefield, they're blasted out of the sky by satellite arrays in a dazzling display. Thora can feel the creepy woman's frustration at this. Then she sees her, shrouded in Darkness, performing a summoning ritual. A singular beam of blinding Light tears through the black sky with the velocity of a shooting star, headed straight for the Scarlett Keep. He collides with the structure so precisely that he only creates a small fissure. After a moment, an explosion, bright and disastrous, completely levels the Keep to rubble. They hear a deafening scream throughout the field that could only be Savathûn. Mara races to us. "The Witch is weakened. We strike now!" The creepy woman is regaining her footing as they close in. "All of my detractors in one place. Thank you for bringing them to me, Ana," she says and smiles. Thora turns to Ana, not wanting to see this again. She pulls out a knife and readies it toward Mara. Thora makes a move to stop her, but she can't. She's frozen in place by Ana. Ana moves forward with the knife. Suddenly she's tackled from behind. There is a struggle, and Thora finds herself able to move. "Ana!" She cries. Ana is dead, a gilded knife embedded deep in her heart, and Mama stands up, a triumphant look on her face. "How?" The creepy woman asks angrily. "You were supposed to be dealt with already!" Mara rises to face the creepy woman, her face cold and proud. "It's over, Eris. The Darkness can never win so long as there are those with Light within them." There is a flash of blinding Light, and Eris screams. The Traveler has broken free from its cage. Zavala takes a deep breath, his light returning, as Eris dissolves in a whirlwind of color. Thora woke up in a sweat. Her dream was different. This had never happened before. Then suddenly she understood. Mama hadn't been in the first dream, because the monsters had eaten her. But the monsters hadn't eaten her, and now that she was working for Queen Mara again, she was going to save her! Thora grinned. Mama was awesome. Maybe there wasn't anything to worry about. She pulled found her sketchbook and started to record the dream's new ending. Suddenly, a second significance occurred to her. In her dream, the guardian named Zavala had gotten his Light back. If that happened, maybe Daddy would get his Light back, too. That's what he had said he needed to do. Maybe Daddy would come home! But when was that going to happen? She had first seen him leaving when she was four. If she saw everything six years before it happened... Thora frowned. She'd be sixteen before he came home. If she even saw that happening anytime soon. "Thora?" Mama was standing outside the door. Thora smiled at her. "Good morning, Mama!" Mama smiled back. "Morning, sweetheart. Queen Mara is here to talk to you." "Oh. Does she want to come up here, or does she want me to come down there?" "I'm right here," said the Voice. The Queen from her dream stepped into the room. Thora stood up, stumbling through a curtsy and tucking her hair behind her ears. The Queen smiled, turning to Mama, saying, "Oh, how precious. She has my brother's eyes." Mama smiled back but it looked a little forced, as if the brief mention of Daddy brought her pain. "Hello," Thora said, cautiously, "Are... are you the one who's been talking to me?" "No, I am not. She is called 'Riven of a thousand voices,' for she can imitate any voice she hears, and she's always been fond of using mine." Thora could see why. It was a very intimidating voice, mysterious, commanding, powerful. "Why does she talk to me?" "You must be careful, little one. Her foresight may one day prove untrustworthy. Take precautions on these visions but no risks. Her motives are only for herself." "Uh...." "She serves no side but her own, I mean. She is helping you for personal revenge on those who sought to harm you, not because she cares or wants to help you." "Oh, okay. I see." Thora made another line with her pencil. "Your mother tells me you like to draw these dreams of yours. May I see?" Thora nodded, letting her come closer and look at her sketchbook. She flipped back to the beginning, and Thora saw her face change many times as she looked, to pity as she read through Mama and Daddy's fight- Thora hadn't meant for her to look back quite that far- revulsion at the monsters and her siblings' gruesome deaths, and then she saw Thora watching her and made her face unreadable again as she looked all the things Daddy was doing. Then she came to her own death and looked very startled. Thora quickly tugged the sketchbook away, saying, "Don't worry, I had the dream again and it changed. Mama saved you. Because I told her about how the monsters were coming so instead we came here and so now it'll be different. That's what I was just drawing." "Hmm." Mara frowned in puzzlement. "I think I'll train you myself. This is too urgent to be trusted to another techeun. I'll talk to your mother about bringing you to the temple to study. There are many things you must learn about our people." "Okay. Cool." Mara took one last troubled look at Thora's sketchbook before saying, "I'm sorry. You're an amazing artist, Thora. I meant to say that, but I was distracted." "Thanks." "That's all I wanted to know for now. We'll speak again soon. Always remember... the burden you carry is heavy, but you carry it for those you love." Mara gave her a piercing look. "That is something I must remind myself, sometimes. Power is a difficult path that not everyone was made to walk, and you are young. But you can trust me."
