Spiritfarer - Your weekly game recommendation (02/12/2021)

G-good evening- *sniffle* Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from Oxbury. *wipes tears* And I have another game recommendation for you. In Spiritfarer, you take the role of Stela, who has taken over duties from Charon to ferry souls down the River Styx to the afterlife. Only, in Spiritfarer, the River Styx is reimagined as an ocean, dotted with little islands. Spirits appear in this world when they die, and it is up to you to fulfill their final requests before they pass on. This sets up the basic gameplay of Spiritfarer; sail around the ocean, explore various islands, and take care of the spirits on your ship, by cooking their favorite foods, building them houses, and so on. It’s very relaxing, and trying to figure out who likes what kinds of foods is surprisingly fun. Along the way, your spirits will have special requests for you to complete, ranging from building special buildings, to cooking special foods, or visiting certain locations, etc. During these events you learn more about the spirits you’re taking care of; their personalities, likes & dislikes, what their lives were like, and so on. By the end of the game I found myself attached to every single one of them, as they’re all rather well written! But, Spiritfarer is ultimately a game about saying goodbye. Your job, as I’ve mentioned, is to help spirits pass onto the next life, and so, once their questlines are complete, that’s what you do; you take them to the Evergate, where they can pass on to the next life. Between the amazing music, gorgeous art style, and the touching speeches the spirits give you before you go, these scenes are always extremely moving. I found myself welling up with tears at every single one, and outright crying on a few of them. I’ve never actually seen the full Evergate animation, as I always sadly close my eyes before it finishes. And then, once they’re gone, life keeps on going. You still have other responsibilities to take care of, but now everything is just a tad bit lonlier. And yet, as sad as it is, each spirit’s departure also leaves you with a feeling of peace. It’s always a heartbreaking moment, but somehow it also feels a bit heartwarming, as well. If all this sounds a little boring, well then there are two things the game does to keep it interesting! Firstly, most resources and refining stations have a minigame associated with them. Some of these are simple things, like dragging a saw back & forth across a tree. Some of them are much more exciting, though, like dashing around your boat to collect the incoming lightning strikes! And Stella’s platforming moveset is surprisingly in depth, making exploring the islands a blast. The only real complaint I have with this game is by it’s very nature, as you near the end of the game you have less spirits to take care of, and that means less to do. This makes completing the final missions a little boring, as you sail from one place to another without much to kill the time. But, of course, that’s really only an issue at the very end, and you still have a phenomenal game up until that point! Tl;dr? Here’s my point! You should play Spiritfarer! Final verdict: Super depressing, relaxing, and heartwarming, all at the same time out of 10! But that’s all for now folks, jambuhbye!
