Tangle Tower - Your weekly game recommendation (02/05/2021)

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from Tangle Tower! ..Or.. I would be, but I don’t like the look of this lake surrounding the island. I think I’ll stay on this side of the shore! Which is fine, because I’ve got another game recommendation while I’m here! Tangle Tower is a point and click detective game, where you try and solve the mystery of who murdered Freya Fellow. I’m not usually one for point & click games, but with that charming art style, beautiful animations, and kind of ridiculois premise (“You think Freya was stabbed.. By a painting?”), I just had to try this one! And indeed I’m glad I did! The basic gameplay is rather simple—as you would expect from a point & click adventure. You walk around, clicking on stuff, and your protagonists, Sally & Grimiore, will comment on it. Important pieces of evidence will get moved into your inventory. Most major rooms also have at least one puzzle that you have to solve for the most important pieces of evidence, and let me say most of these puzzles are really clever! I enjoyed solving almost every single one of them! Besides that, you can talk to your various murder suspects. Each character has four main bits of dialogue; meeting them for the first time, them telling you about themselves, what happened the day of the murder, and their official statement. However, you can also ask them about the various other residents of the house, and ask them about any piece of evidence you’ve come across. Gather up all the right evidence, and each character will also have a “suspicion” dialogue option, where you can question them more in depth about a particular piece of evidence, or piece of their story that doesn’t add up. This is probably one of the most fun parts of the game, as Tangle Tower has a really clever system where you put the evidence together in the right order. It stops you from just brute forcing the answers, and makes you really pay attention to what’s happening for you to piece it together. The real selling point of a game like this isn’t the gameplay, though, but the story, and let me assure you, it’s a good one. I love almost every character in the game, and the thought of which one of these yahoos could’ve possibly murdered Freya was constantly on my mind. Even Freya herself isn’t just the murder victim; from everything she left behind you really get a sense of who she was, and honestly I’m sad I never got to meet her. This mystery goes deeper than just Freya, though.. What sort of secrets are lying in wait deep within Tangle Tower..? It’s hard to really say anything more than that, though ‘cause, y’know, spoilers. I do have a few issues with this game, though. There was one question left in my head that just never got answered, one particular puzzle felt a bit too obscure, and the first chapter is a lot longer than the rest, which sort of throws off the pacing. But, despite these issues, I still highly recommend this game to anyone who’s up for a good mystery! Tl;dr? Here’s my point! You should play Tangle Tower! Final verdict: Astounding amounts of alliteration out of 10! That’s all for now, folks! Jambuhbye!

 • This one actually looks really interesting. Like you, I'm not a big fan of point and click adventure games. Silence is pretty good though, and Grim Fandango looks great from the early parts I've seen.
