Transistor—Your weekly game recommendation 01/22/2021

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from Cloudbank. So.. You turned left. I thought we were going to skip town. We’re going back there? . . . Look, whatever you’re thinking, do me a favor. Don’t let me go. Because I’ve got another game recommendation for you! Supergiant Games is one of my favorite developers. They’ve made great games such as Bastion, Pyre, and Hades, and while I would highly recommend each and every one of those, I’ve decided to limit myself to just recommending one.. For now. And, if I was only able to recommend one of their games, I would definitely have to go with my personal favorite; Transistor. Transistor is played from an isometric view, as you make your way through the city of Cloudbank, fighting strange machine like creatures known as The Process. On its surface, its combat seems a bit clunkier than either Bastion or Hades, until you learn about Red’s nifty “Turn()” ability, allowing her to freeze time and plot out her actions, at the cost of temporarily being left defenseless afterwards. This means for any given combat encounter, you need to balance the risks of entering Turn() or just fighting the old fashioned way, and most of the time you’ll likely find yourself switching between them several times during combat. Since most people here are familiar with shooty shooty pew pew games, you can think of it as sort of similar to Fallout’s VATS system, and just like VATS, it makes for a really fun hybrid-genre combat. As you progress through the game, you’ll gain access to new powers known as “Functions()”. The nifty part about this is every Function() can be used in three different ways; you can equip it to an action slot, turning it into a manually activated ability, a passive slot, turning it into some sort of passive bonus, or a support slot, where it powers up another Function(). For example;
Jaunt() Active: Dash a short distance away. Passive: Recover from Turn() more quickly. Support: Speeds up most Functions(), and enables them to be used during Turn() cooldown.
This makes customizing your build really fun, as you pick and choose what Functions() are necessary as active abilities, which ones you want to sacrifice to power up others, so on, so forth. And you can always change it on the fly, when you reach a save point, giving you plenty of leeway to experiment. The story is—like all Supergiant games—really great, as well. A group known as the Camerata tried to assassinate you with a strange glowing sword called the Transistor. Your boyfriend took the blow for you, and wound up trapped inside, but saving your life in return. The event left you without a voice, and him without a body, but now you have the Transistor, and you’re going to use it hunt down the Camerata, and make them fix this. At the same time, the Process begins appearing in the city, transforming it into something, and getting in your way. No doubt, all part of the Camerata’s plan. You have to stop the Process, stop the Camerata, get your voice back, get your body back, and return things back to normal.. But, that’s easier said than done. And there’s so many questions.. What does the Process want? Why did the Camerata attack you? What is the Transistor, really? There are a lot of twists and turns, and your sword-boyfriend will be with you every step of the way to narrate your actions. His commentary really helps sell the already great story, and make it that much better. And to top it all off, all of Supergiant’s games have this amazing singer named Ashley Barret, and her work in Transistor is the best of it. The game is worth it for the soundtrack alone. I only really have one problem with the game, being that I don’t like the ending much, but it’s a rather small complaint, I think. Tl;dr? Here’s my point! You should play Transistor! Final verdict: I-wish-I-had-a-sword-boyfriend out of 10! That’s all for now, folks! See you in the Country!
