If I remember correctly D1 started out on a live stream walking in astronaut suits a cutscene?
I can see if the story started out that way but it didn't, it started out us just being woken up by our ghost outside the walls with no back story or a story. You had to read the grimoire cards to get any idea on WTH was going on.

Personally while I understand that you don't like the armor set I think they fit, they got a nice shaman aesthetic going on which matches the dark magic theme of shadowkeep while also looking like old space suits which matches the location But then again, an opinion is something that you can't change
