Aifos Tonight—a weekly general gaming thread (4)

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from Aifos Tonight! This week I went to the deepest reaches of Hallownest to find out guest star! That’s right, today we have the Knight himself! Very exciting! An interview with The Knight (Hollow Knight)
So, Knight, first thing’s first! Can I call you Li’l Ghost? Knight: “...” Wonderful! So tell us a little bit about yourself. What are some of your hobbies? Knight: “...” Really? You? I never would’ve guessed! When did you start? Knight: “...” That long ago? You must be a pro by now! Knight: “...” I would hope so! So, how’s your family been? Your dad staying out of trouble? Knight: “...” Oh.. I’m sorry to hear that. What about your mother, is she good? Knight: “...” A run of bad luck for the whole crew, huh? What about your sister? Knight: “...” Kidnapped!? Omigosh we have to go- Knight: “...” Huh? Well, I guess you’re right, but.. Knight: “...” Her own game!? That’s amazing, Li’l Ghost! Knight: “...” You’re right, you’re right. She’ll be fine. Oh! And it looks like we’re out of time! Let’s move on to the next segment!
Such a way with words, that one. Now, I hate to be a downer, but I’ve got a sad story for you all. Storytime with Aifos! The tale of Bubba (Bioshock 2)
In Bioshock 2 you can get a Plasmid that lets you control security drones. At its maximum level, it even lets you summon them at will, for a large amount of EVE. When you do this, they also come with names. One security drone I got once was named Bubba. Bubba and I were the best of friends, he was with me from the very beginning of the level, and I was getting close to the boss. We had a particularly nasty encounter with a group of splicers, and Bubba, he.. He disappeared. I searched everywhere for him, but he was nowhere to be found. Heartbroken, and filled with rage, I rushed to the boss, and avenged Bubba by killing him and his entourage. And then a miracle happened! Bubba was alive! As happy as could be, I went to finish the level.. And then, my happiness was ripped away, as the entire level began to flood. I yelled for Bubba to run, to escape through a security drone chute, but he didn’t listen! He stayed with me to the end. I could survive underwater. But he couldn’t. ;-;
*wipes tear* Oh, I promised myself I wouldn’t cry. *sniff* Let’s.. Let’s move on. An Eye(fos) to the Future Hollow Knight: Silksong
Hollow Knight is, in my opinion, the best Metroidvania to ever exist.. At least out of the ones I played. It’s not exactly super innovative, but it knows what it’s trying to do, and it does it nearly flawlessly. And, with three free DLC, that each added plenty of new content, you can imagine my hype for the promised 4th DLC, which would be much bigger, as it would actually cost money. But, Team Cherry (never one to go halfway) decided “Forget the DLC, let’s make it a full blown sequel!”. And that’s when they announced Silksong, the sequel to Hollow Knight! And if Hollow Knight is Dark Souls, Silksong is Bloodborne, with an much faster, and more acrobatic take on the formula. If it’s even half as good as Hollow Knight, there’s my game of the year!
*squeals* Aah, I’m so- I mean.. How exciting. It looks phenomenal! But, I suppose it’s time to wrap up! But mot before; The Segment That Games That Are Really Great Get Mentioned And You Should Try Them Armed with Wings
Okay, maybe I’m cheating with this one. And, heck, it’s been so long since I played these games that maybe they’re actually crap, and I’m simply blinded by nostalgia. With that being said, AwW are a series of flash games that you can play on the internet! There are actually five games here, not one! Armed with Wings Armed with Wings 2 Armed with Wings: Red Moon Armed with Wings 3 Armed with Wings: Culmination Admittedly, I didn’t play Red Moon, and the first one was kinda bad, but 2, 3 and Culmination were all great platforming games, that I absolutely loved as a kid! The protagonist is different in all of the games (except 1 & Culmination), but all connect to form an overarching narrative. It primarily tells the story of the tyrant Vandheere Lorde, and his fall from power ay the hands of the first game’s protagonist. And, so nobody can say I’m cheating by saying a flash game, the newest Armed with Wings, Armed with Wings: Rearmed, is on Steam! I haven’t played it, though, but I do know it’s a remake of the first game, making it better! Despite being free flash games, if Sun Studios bundled them all up, and threw them on console, I’d probably be willing to pay $30 for ‘em!
Well, time to wrap up! Got any good gaming stories? Games you’re looking forward to? Any game recommendations? In any case, this is your place to talk about anything gaming! But that’s all for now folks! Jambuhbye!

    • Got another story for y’all. (Or maybe I should just save this for next week, but whatever) So, I was playing Don’t Starve: Shipwrecked. For those unaware, Don’t Starve is a survival game, and the Shipwrecked expansion takes place on a group of islands you can sail between. Now, I explore the sea, looking for a good island, and after a lot of exploring I find one. Two jungles, lots of Crabbit dens, the works. So I set up camp, and go to get some wood. I chop down a jungle tree, and a snake falls out of the branches, but not just any snake, a poison snake! I get greedy with one of my attacks, and it bites me, inflicting me with poison! Now, I’m still new to Shipwrecked, so I’m not quite sure how to make an antivenom, so instead I tried to keep my health up until it wore off. I had a good fight, healing salves, butterfly wings, the usual healing stuff, but I couldn’t keep it up, and I wound up dying from poison. Luckily, though, I had found a resurrection altar on an island I passed a while back, so I woke up there. My plan, then, was simple; make a raft, and get back to camp. All I needed was some flint, so I could make an axe, and get some wood! Only, I had already visited this island, and, well, I took all the flint. Without an axe, I had no way of getting home, so I needed to try and survive here. But, y’know, this island wasn’t so bad. Lots of berry bushes & limpet rocks (food sources), and Pigmen were hangin’ around, too. So, I had a new goal; survive. I fed some of the pigs, and they started following me around. The ghost of my dead twin sister Abigail was there, too, and honestly, it seemed like I had a good chance of survival. At least for a while. Then night fell. As I crafted a torch, I realized; it was a full moon. I heard a howl. My three piggy companions transformed into monstrous Werepigs, and rushed me! Panicking, I smacked one with my torch, sending it into a frenzy as it went ablaze, as Abigail successfully slew one of the others. The one that was burning rushed me again, but Abigail flew in for another kill. The last one was distracted, but we didn’t have room for mercy. I had no armor, they could rip me apart, easily. So we slew him without hesitation. Alone again, at daybreak, I realized there was one part of the island I hadn’t checked. A swamp to the Southeast. I had avoided it for a reason, it was much more likely to be my grave than hold any flint.. But there was nothing for me here anymore anyway. With Abigail by my side, I walked into the swamp, looking for flint.. And never walked out.

    • I'm currently playing devil may cry 5. It just went on sale and I'm a huge fan of the series. Fantastic game so far. Also been playing assassin's Creed Odyssey and the division 2. I'm waiting on Warhammer chaosbane, gonna be just like Diablo so I'm excited. I also bought the ffx/X2 remaster, just haven't gotten into it too much. Very pretty with 4k

      • Man, this has annoyed me so much I almost want to give it its own thread, but I’ll settle for here. So, there’s this game called Swords of Ditto. When it came out, it was this cool classic LoZ-like Roguelike game. It was a little short on content, but it was good fun. Little by little, though, with each successive update the Roguelike elements got removed. First, the timer got increased, then dropped altogether, items started carrying between runs, etc. It was annoying, but overall still a good game. Then came the newest update, “Mormo’s Curse”. The last traces of the timer were wiped out, and they removed perma-death. Just.. Ugh. It’s gone from one of my favorite games, to one I almost can’t even stand. Without the Rogulike elements, I can’t really excuse the downsides that come with procedural generation. Maybe I haven’t given the new version a fair chance, but.. *sigh* Just wanted to vent a little bit.

        • So, word got out today that studio behind ECHO - the game I recommended here - has been shut down. Such a bummer. On the plus, they had a movie adaptation planned that is still going ahead. https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2019/05/07/echo-studio-ultra-ultra-shut-down-film-still-in-the-works/
Got any good gaming stories?
I have many great stories of my time in the arcade, or at a LAN, tabletop sessions, or the endless amount of amazing adventures my friends and I went on in WoW.... But one memory that always sticks out to me was when I was 10 years old. I was one of those kids that would wake up super early and sit around forever before heading to school. I mostly spent the morning on my SNES back when it was cool to own a SNES. On this one particular morning I was playing LEGEND - a crazy difficult side scrolling beat 'em up - and I was at a point I'd never managed to get to before in all my time playing. My mother (who was getting ready for work) used to watch me play from time to time, and saw how excited I was to be this far in one of my favourite games. Instead of turning it off and taking me to school, she picked up the controller, entered as Player 2, and started helping me finish it. It was a hard game and I remember just managing to complete it by the skin of our teeth. I was an hour late for school, and she must have been over that for work. I have no idea what made her sit down and play with me, or how she explained it to her boss, but I spent the rest of the day on such a high. One of my fondest memories.
Games you’re looking forward to?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pupdeq1MoVw The Last Night. This game kinda went AWOL. I know they have been in a bit of trouble, but it has been confirmed it isn't cancelled. I'd like to see some more info on it, though. The art style and setting had me hooked right away.
Any game recommendations?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqqVOdi_0kI&has_verified=1 Moonlighter. Over a year old now, but still well worth the asking price. Moonlighter is an ARPG in which you play as a humble shopkeeper with big dreams of adventure and heroism. The game shifts between your day job as a classic merchant you'd find in any game like Skyrim or Zelda, and the nights in which you delve various dungeons, crypts, and woodlands in search of weapons and treasures to sell to the adventurers the next day. Tight controls, charming story, and a killer soundtrack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVgcF9Shf6s ECHO Kind of a hidden gem, I think. ULTRA ULTRA's debut sci-fi game in which you play as woman arriving at a planet with the hopes of bringing back a life she feels shouldn't have been lost. ECHO has an intriguing story that really helps carry you through the game (though, admittedly with a fairly slow build up), stunning baroque architecture that leaves you stopping to stare in every room, a haunting soundtrack, and some quality voice acting. What makes ECHO such a great game to me, however, is the unique gameplay mechanic it's built around. You soon find out you're in a hostile environment that mimics everything you do. Enemies are replicas of you, and everything you do to navigate this labyrinth is taught to them. As you start to sneak around environment and stealth your way from room to room, they do too. Using your gun to butcher them is a breeze, clearing a path for you to progress - until they start using guns, too. You walk around the enemies until you find yourself cornered, leaving you no option but to sprint away - only for them to begin sprinting after you. This mechanic makes ECHO a horror game without having to be one. The atmosphere is incredibly tense as the number of enemies around you grows and grows, knowing that anything you do out of desperation is going to evolve the labyrinth. Jumping over tables, walking through water, jumping from balconies, using elevators, pushing, stealth takedowns, replenishing health, using distractions.... The only real downside to this game is the actual gameplay loop. Each "puzzle room" is just a harder version of the last (with the odd exception). The story, environment, atmosphere and unique mechanic really manage to carry this loop, but it's still something I'm sure could turn a few people off.

                •
Got any good gaming stories?
This is actually a tear-jerker, but for me, it's an indie game called That Dragon, Cancer. It's a really sad real-life story about a couple trying to raise a son that was diagnosed with terminal cancer at 12 months old. As someone who actually lost a relative to cancer, the game really hit me in the feels, hard.
Games you’re looking forward to?
Definitely Fire Emblem Three Houses. Im really pumped to hop back into Fire Emblem after Fates! Fire Emblem Awakening is one of my favourite games, so my expectations are pretty high for Three Houses. Another game I'm excited for is Persona 5 Royal. It's an extended version of Persona 5, my second favourite game of all time. There's a third semester, A new phantom thief and a -blam!- ton of new content! And then lastly, Cyberpunk 2077. It looks really intriguing from a lore and RPG standpoint and I'm really looking forward to giving it a shot when it launches.

                      • Currently continuing my playthrough of the Metroid series. I say "series," but I won't be playing Federation Force or Prime Hunters since they're multiplayer games and I'm a loner. I might play the original and 2 one day, but I'm satisfied sticking with their remakes for now. Anyway! Having played Super for the first time last year, it shot straight into my No. 1 game, and I felt like I needed to play the others. After finishing Samus Returns a month or so ago, and finishing Zero Mission today, the Metroid series is now my favourite video game series. I'm currently playing through Fusion (which is great so far) and Other M (which is not so great, but entertaining enough that I'm sticking with it) and... I just love this series. With how much you've hyped up Hollow Knight in recent times, that will probably be my next exploration platformer venture. I'm looking forward to it! Oh, somewhat on topic, and since this post of yours normally asks about OSTs, there's a tune in several Nintendo games that keeps propping up. You know that fairy fountain theme song? From the LoZ series? Well it's also on one of the map screens in Super Mario Bros 3. And I just recently discovered it's in Zero Mission... ish. I dunno. I just found it weird. I wonder if there's some significance to it all.

I remember playing through the Armed With Wings series back in I want to say middle school or early high school. Probably one of my favorite flash games which I ended up picking up on steam when I found out it it was on sale. Not sure why since it was free. Probably an impulse buy. As for recommendations, if you liked 2016 Doom's constantly moving style combat, Mothergunship mimics it pretty well. Plus you get to make your own wacky guns for your missions though they somewhat limited what you can bring into a mission so you aren't running in with 15 minigun barrels strapped to a metal rod.
