What is up, guys! Lore for Dummies is back! Maybe you care, maybe you don’t, who knows, Imma do this anyway! This post will our favorite Hive god, Big Daddy Oryx, and his autobiography, the Books of Sorrow (which is for sale at www.dreadnought.com). I can’t cover all of them in one post, or nobody will read it, so I’m going to split it up. Alright, time to dive in! *rubs hands together in excitement*
So the Books of Sorrow! Some of the most intriguing Lore in the game, even to this day. They tell Oryx’s backstory, and how he came to be. He starts out as a lowly little lass, by the name of Aurash. She was the daughter of the Osmium King, on the planet Fundament, home to the predecessors of the Hive, insect-like creatures. Anyway, the Osmium King was killed by a rival named Taox, and the sisters swear their revenge.
So, to sum up the first section of the Books of Sorrow, the three daughters of the Osmium King (Aurash, Sathona, and Xi Ro), in their search to avenge their father, encounter a giant death fish called the Leviathan! It warns them about darkness and death and all that other fun stuff. To this, the sisters respond like this:
K.
Then, they meet the Worm Gods! In case anyone cares, their names were Akka, Eir, Ur, Yul, and of course Xol. Yeah, do me a favor and forget that whole DLC, it sucked Lore-wise and didn’t even fit in with the books of sorrow. Anyway, the Worm Gods and the Sisters strike a deal: the Worm Gods will grant them power and immortality to protect themselves from their foes (mostly the Leviathan, a big fish that apparently wanted to kill them, according the the Worm Gods). However, in return, the Worms would also gain strength. They assured the sisters that this was a small price to pay.
Big shocker here folks: the sisters took the deal. From then on, Aurash is known as Auryx, or “Long Thought”. She also becomes a male, it’s 2019, anyone got a problem? Didn’t think so. Sathona becomes known as Savathûn, and becomes very cunning. Xi Ro is renamed Xivu Arath, and she becomes the embodiment of war.
Then, a whole bunch of stuff happens. The tl;dr of it: They learn the Sword Logic. If you’re here in Lore, you probably know what the Sword Logic is, but in case you don’t, the basic rule is that to kill is to gain power. Auryx is then killed by Savathûn, but essentially comes back because it wasn’t in the Ascendent plane, and therefore wasn’t a final death (I’ll go into the Ascendent plane and Throne worlds in another post).
The Worms then teach Auryx the power of paracausality. I went in-depth on paracausality in my last post, here. But in case you’re just in the flow and don’t want to click that, paracausality pretty much means the power to reject the cause -> effect system.
So, they’re gaining power, still assumedly searching for Taox. However, the Sisters realize that the Worms are feeding off them, and that they are slowly killing themselves. By the nature of their deal, they would grow according to the tribute they gained from their killing, but in doing so lusted for more, going beyond their ability to feed the Worms. Auryx called it trickery and, betrayal, crying out that they would never be eternal. F in the chat, guys.
What happens next is hella confusing. As I understand it, Auryx and his sisters are overcome by the need to feed their Worms, and the the threat of the Ecumene, who were enemies of Auryx and his breed, the Hive. So, the three agree that Auryx must kill Savathûn and Xivu Arath, in order to feed his worm and to acquire enough power to defeat his enemies. They readily sacrifice themselves, and there deaths were in the throne world, so they were considered true deaths.
With this new power, Auryx gains an audience with Akka, the strongest of the Worms. It is from Akka that he learns how to use the power of the Deep to take, thus becoming Oryx, the Taken King that we know and love. Oryx declares himself the King of Shapes, and swears to use this power to destroy the Ecumene once and for all.
TO BE CONTINUED!
Dun-dun-dun!!!
