Aifos Tonight—a weekly general gaming post! (3)

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from Aifos Tonight! Today we’ve- Gaige: “What’s up, Offtopic!?” Gaige, it’s not time ye- Gaige: “Alright, Aifos, now when I say “mechro” you say “mancer”! Mechro!” Gaige.. Gaige: “I said mechro!” *sigh* Fine, let’s just star- Gaige: “You guys suck.” An Interview with Gaige “the Mechromancer”
So, Gaige, you’ve got a thing for robotics, right? Gaige: “Um, obviously? I’m kinda like the greatest engineer you’ll ever meet.” So, how come you couldn’t fix that Claptrap unit? Gaige: “Because the game had to be built for five other characters doing the same thing, and the rest of them probably couldn’t even screw in a lightbulb.” Well, what are some things you’ve built? Gaige: “You’re looking at one!” Oh, your prosthetic arm? You built that? Gaige: “Hell yeah I did!” Impressive! What happened to your arm, anyway? Was there an accident? Gaige: “Nope. I chopped it off.” You—wha..? Why? Gaige: “Because! Check this out! Klaatu barada nikto!” *digistruct sound* What the—!? Papi-Papika! Invading killer robot! Papika: “Papikannons activate!” Gaige: “Wai-wai-wait! That’s my killer robot! Pretty sweet, right? My badass robot arm comes wit a badass robt! Don’t worry, though, he’s not gonna hurt anyone!” What about.. Marcie? That was on the news.. Gaige: “That was just a fluke! It’s fine, I promise!” Alright.. Papika, keep your Papikannons ready, just in case. So, uh.. What can he do? Gaige: “Digistruct claws, laser blasts, big explosions! You know, the works. You should see him fight! He’s all like, ha-!” *punch* Ow! *Deathtrap activates claws* Gaige: “Woah, woah, wait Deathtrap, he’s not-“ Papika: “PAPIKANNONS!” *pew* Gaige: “Oh.. My.. God.. That was SICK! Did you just take out Deathtrap with one shot!? You’ve got to let me take a look at those things!”
We’re moving on, now. Gaige: “But-“ We’re moving on! Let’s do something more relaxing, like.. Oh! I know! The Sound of OSTs 02’s theme, Kirby 64
This song belongs to the game’s secret final boss, 02. You can only access 02’s fight by collecting all the Crystal Shards in the game. I’ve always loved Kirby music, with the bright happy songs portraying the game’s whimsical surface, a d the dark creepy ones alluding to it’s more messed up backstory. 02’s theme in particular is not only dark, but also somehow.. Pretty. I love it.
I’ve always loved that song. Star Allies has a nice remix, too. Welp, moving on! A Piece of Design Star Points—Steven Universe: Save the Light
Whether or not you’re a fan of Steven Universe, this game is a great turn based RPG. There’s one piece of desgn in it, though, that really lets it shine! And that’s its star point system! The game functions on a pseudo-ATB system, with enemies attacking on a timer. The interesting part is how you attack, though. See, there’s a timer that slowly builds up through the match, and once full, you get 5SP. SP can be spent between ny of yout characters, or saved for next turn. For example; you can use 2SP for Connie’s sword slash, then 2SP for Greg’s healing Jam, then save that 1SP for your next turn, and put all 6SP into Connie’s multi-stab attack. The game’s a little easy, but that system has potential!
Alright, and now it’s time for the final, and very well named segment! That Segment That Got Another Rename Because Its Name Was Bad Where I Tell You About Cool Games *facepalm* Who’s writing these..? Ikaruga
Ikaruga is a shmup, that is a “shoot ‘em up”, also called “bullet hells”. While the game totally still fills the screen with bullets, it adds a unique twist on things by giving everything a “polarity”. While you have white polarity, you takr no damage from white shots, and deal extra damage to black enemies, and vice versa. And I promise, not in a racist way, it’s the colors of fighter jets. Do you go for higher damage, but tougher dodging? Can you manage to switch on time between waves of shots? It’s super fun!
Ah, but what about you, Offtopic? What are your favorite OSTs? Best bits of design? Cool games you recommend? Whatever they are! That’s all for now folks! Jambuhbye, and remember; ANARCHY! FOREVAAAAAAAAAAH! AND EVAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

  • As far as soundtracks go, I’d rate Halo 3 and DOOM (2016)’s soundtracks as the highest, with a shoutout to Brütal Legend, as well.

Gannondorf can kill the entire smash ultimate cast in three hits or less and it's both amazing and really stupid

Y’know what? I’m gonna talk about Space Hulk. There were a lot of references to Space Hulk yesterday in my life, culminating in me playing a session of LANCER where the mission was very similar to a game of Space Hulk as we fought a constant horde of bugs within a tunnel network. I wonder what about Space Hulk appeals to people the most. Is it the atmosphere of cramped and decrepit hallways, heavy armor, pinging sensors, and machine guns waiting to fail? Maybe it’s the assymetric rocket tag, where one side has the advantage of range and special weapons, while the other has numbers and mobility. Considering my experience with alternatives of the game’s core concept, it’s probably the inevitability. While genestealers are fragile, they can hit hard, and they keep spawning. Your side on the other hand only has so much health to spare, and if their ammo isn’t limited then their best crowd control methods are limited. With the need to push forward and complete objectives, a stage is set for last stands, risky maneuvers, and sacrifices.

Ooh! It’s Gaige! I just started my ultimate vault hunter play through on her. More like greatest vault hunter alive! I had to start from the beginning because I couldn’t get my saves back from my 360 unfortunately because I saved everything on my hard drive and sold it 🙁 Anyways, some of my favorite soundtracks come from Halo and Dark Souls. Especially In Amber Clad from Halo 2 and the Abyss Watchers in Dark souls 3

            • Y’know, on the topic of games, way back when I played this Avatar: The Last Airbender game. It was pretty standard for the most part. Took place during Book 1, so Aang, Katara, and Sokka were all heading to the North Pole. Something happened, and some mech-head was trying to kill them. Only, there was this thing that always struck me as weird. They wanted an Earthbender in your party, but since it was Book 1 they couldn’t have Toph, so they decided to put Haru in there. You know, that one guy from that one episode? I think that’s his only appearance, so it seemed like such an odd choice.

            •
What are your favorite OSTs?
Without a doubt Persona 5. It easily has my favourite OST out of any videogame I've ever played, with some really catchy battle music (Last Surprise, Rivers in the Desert, Our Beginning), Great background music (Tokyo Daylight, Beneath The Mask) and overall, it's just a musical masterpiece!
Best bits of design?
New Vegas in a lore perspective has some of the best world-building I've seen. Every action you do has a consequence, and it REALLY emphasises it, especially in the ending to New Vegas. You have the flexibility to decide who the Courier (your character) really is, and you can steer the story in any direction, based on the actions you have done.
Cool games you recommend?
The two games I have mentioned above are the easiest games I can recommend as a fan of RPGs. Another game I'd recommend if you're a fan of side-scrollers like Kirby is Shovel Knight. Really fun gameplay and some memorable knights really make Shovel Knight one of my favourite Indies.
What are your favorite OSTs?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZ6sFgqhFWs This little gem from Shadowrun: Dragonfall. I wish there was more piano :( It might not be the best song of the soundtrack, but it's the theme of my favourite character across the entire series - not just Dragonfall.
Best bits of design?
Hoof! Tough one.... But probably the way Nier: Automata seamlessly weaves its narrative into its gameplay. Saving your game, upgrading your character, and fast travelling are all backed up by some kind of storytelling as opposed to just being a game mechanic. The way Nier: Automata takes full advantage of its medium in more ways than I can list is enough to just wow me.
Last week it was also listed as Famitsu's #3 game of this era (1989-2019)! Being beaten out by Breath of the Wild and Chrono Trigger.

Cool games you recommend?
Beholder. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5k-bf4xxAw You play as a landlord living in a police state. It has become your "job" to spy on your tenants and report anything suspicious to the authorities. You can do things such as leaving cameras set up in their homes, or sneak in while they're at work. This game has meaningful story developments that depend on the difficult choices you've made throughout your time as an increasingly oppressive, totalitarian government lackey. There's a lot of great examples I could throw out here, but I wouldn't want to spoil anything. Just know that this game doesn't like you sitting on the fence about what you should and shouldn't report, and there are consequences for choosing a side.

Mordhau released on Steam today for around $30 (and it’s 10% off, for some reason). So far the reviews on Steam are looking pretty good.

                  • Dishonored 2's level design is some of the best I have ever seen. The amount of ways they let you play through a level in how you take down guards or sneak past them is insane.

Obligatory upvote because Gaige OST I’ll bring up this time around Destiny (Ablaze) from Fire emblem: Awakening Uhh...best design bit...the world in State of Decay 2, particularly Cascade hills, each one looks really good Speaking of games I recommend...State of Decay 2, yes the game is a little rough around the edges (Horrible flashback to driving into a bloater that hadn’t rendered yet) But that’s not to say it’s bad! The game is incredibly fun, and I’ll go so far as to say it is one of the best open world zombie games you can get yours hands on

Design... Maybe not everyone will get the full experience... I mean not everyone is into "simulation" deep enough to own peripherals and shyte. Not to be elitist or anything, it's just not that popular in the mainstream. Kunos built the first Assetto Corsa FROM SCRATCH. Like ground up. I think they really nailed the physics and force feedback (like with a steering wheel) models. It just feels really good for a first attempt (yeah yeah... they've had plenty of time to patch up. But it's still one of my favorites to bust out the wheel for.) E: So I guess it wasn't the first attempt. First attempt at scale is more like it.

                          • I don't know if this counts as "design" per se, but I've been looking into Nintendo's Virtual Console of late, and I really cannot fathom why they decided against implementing it onto the Switch. Okay, I'll start at the beginning. When they first announced VC wasn't coming to Switch last year, I... didn't really care. It wasn't something I ever used, so its absence meant little to me. Don't get me wrong; I wasn't one of those people who kept screaming "Well I'm glad VC is gone!" Because that was such a dumb thing people were saying, but yeah, I was pretty apathetic. However, since then, I've really got into the Metroid franchise. Yesterday I booted up ye olde Wii U, and bought Zero Mission and Fusion. I haven't started Fusion yet. But Zero Mission is glorious. Anyway, I digress. The point is, through those purchases, and a YouTube video by Arlo I can link if you want me to, I realised how important this feature is. Virtual Console is one of the best ideas in the video game industry since home consoles. ^ I fully believe that. And there is zero logic behind not including it in the Switch. Anyway, that's my two cents (or at least one cent, since I could have further elaborated but eh) on the subject. Oh, and I guess this answers the second question too - Play Zero Mission! It's only £6.29 on Wii U, and it's amazing. Way underrated.

The 3rd is my favorite battle music from that area. Best bits of design eh. I would say it's an exceptional thing when the balance of a games, is so fine tuned, that you can indefinitely complete the game with low development of your character/characters. Sure in turn that can make playing the game normally a breeze but then there are those who even find a challenge at normal pace. Easiest example would be darksouls, with people streaming doing: - No hit - Kill everything with broken dagger? - Kill 10 pvp players no hit Type deal. As for the cool game. I would recommend Rise and Shine. YAAAY The Dark Messenger - FF IX This is the song that plays when you fight Kuja near the end of the game. It's a nice song to fight a foe who's been harassing you the entire game to. Ikaruga was fun, never got to the end of it though, I think I could get to about level 4 or 5 before I got a game over. Though, if we're going to talk bullet hells, I am obligated to bring up Touhou. It's relatively well known in the genre, and the games consist of fairies, vampires, humans, and demons shooting each other with lasers. The 15th installment of the series, Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom (LoLK), is my favorite. It also has my favorite fairy ever, Clownpiece!

I got you.
A OST that comes to mind right now is "wake up, get up, get out there" from Persona 5. It's been my jam for the past few days. As for a game recommendation, I have to reccomend Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Such a fun game with a good amount of challenge. I would say it's less forgiving than Dark Souls, and not quite as fast as Bloodborne, but still just as fun with the deflects and I like the posture mechanic.
