Maybe different for different frames and archetypes, but using a weapon to gradually upgrade it should give you enough sense of whether you'd want to continue to upgrade or scrap it. The main focus would be the cores you'd save upgrading with use of the weapon rather than using cores to upgrade a weapon only to find out you don't really like using it.
