Aifos Tonight—A weekly general gaming thread (1)

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from Aifos Tonight! This weekly post series (who knows how long I’ll keep that up) will simply be a place to talk about video games. What games you’re playing, what you’re excited for, cool moments you’ve had, so on, so forth. Of course, I’ll still post more specific gaming threads every now and then as well, but I thought we needed more general talk, so here I am! And, what better way to kick this off than with everyone’s favorite zombie? Yes, that’s right! We’ve got a very special guest star tonight; Sienna Contiello! An interview with Sienna “Squigly” Contiello (Skullgirls)
Squigly: “Thank you Aifos, but you can just call me Squigly.” Of course. Now, Squigly, I just want to start off by saying I’m so sorry about what happened to your family. You were opera singers, correct? Squigly: “Thank you. And yes, we were. Have you ever been to one of our shows?” I’m afraid not. It was 14 years ago when it happened, I was only 7 at the time. I know age is a touchy subject for undead, but I do have to ask, how old are you, then? Squigly: “Well, I’m technically 28, but I was dead for 14 of those years, so I still like to say 14.” Dead for 14 years, and your skin still looks like you just walked out of a beauty salon. What’s your secret? How do you keep your skin so smooth even after 14 years of decomposing? Squigly: “Well, I have a magic dragon sticking out of my head, so that’s probably part of it.” Of course, Leviathan, I should’ve known. That’s where you get your nickname, right? The way he pokes out of your head like a worm? Squigly: “Yes.” Didn’t you have that nickname before you died, though? Squigly: “Of course.” But didn’t you get Leviathan from your father only moments before you were shot? Squigly: “Yes. Why?” So if you received Leviathan on your death bed, and the name Squigly comes from Leviathan, how did you have it when you were alive? Squigly: “I.. Uh..”
Well, that’s all the time we have for that, let’s move on to our next segment! The Sound of OSTs Off to Sleep, Child of Light
Off to Sleep is the credits song for Child of Light, a turn based RPG pubished (and developed?) by Ubisoft. The song is calm & relaxing, and is always nice to listen to when you’re winding down. As the title suggests, it’s also not bad to help you fall asleep. Of course, this is true for most of Child of Light’s OST, and I’d definitely recommend giving it a listen.
What a pretty song for such a pretty game. But, heard it, lived it, loved it, let’s move on, shall we? Storytime with Aifos All’s Well that Ends Well (Left4Dead2)
I, as Ellis, was playing with my friend, as Nick, and my brother, as Coach, on the map Hard Rain. For the most part, things were good. We made it all the way to the end with little trouble. The boat had arrived, and we were getting ready to leave. As we were running to the boat, my brother got held up behind. Seeing he was having trouble, me & my friend turned to help him.. Until a Tank came through the door. With a heavy heart, we decided to run to the boat, leaving him to die. I made it on first, when a Jockey jumped onto my head, and started trying to pull me into the water. My friend turned his attention from the Tank and shot the Jockey off me, and I returned the favor by shooting as fast as I could at the Tank. And we did it, the Tank went down, my friend was only an inch away from the boat.. When I shot a few more bullets, thinking the Tank was still alive. They flew right into him, and he collapsed onto the ground. With him only inches away from the boat, it took off, leaving both my friend, and my brother to die.
Who doesn’t love a heartwarming story about the power of friendship, huh? Well, we are almost out of time, but before we go, let’s quickly do arguably the most important segment on this show; Games You Probably Haven’t Tried But I Think You Should Because They’re Fun Eesh, Papika, remind me to change that title. Anyway, *ahem*... Legend of the Dark Witch 1 & 2 (PC & 3DS)
Although the final game in the trilogy might have dropped the ball, the first two games in this side scrolling platformer series are a blast! They are, by all means, Mega Man clones. You play the levels in any order, unlock a new power for beating the boss, amd take that new power into other levels. However, the game mixes things up with the Tres system. By spending Tres dropped by enemies, you can obtain temporary upgrades for your current life. Extra damage, extra speed, the ability to hover, that sort of thing. The first game is all about balancing Trea usage on upgrades, and your extra powers, as they both use the same mana source, while the second adds a Capacity gauge that drains exclusively from your extra powers. If you’re looking for a good Mega Man clone, or just a good side scrolling platformer in general, the Dark Witch franchise is a good place to look! Just stay away from the third one!
Tl;dr? Here’s my point! But what about you? Got any game recommendations? Some good stories to share? Some favorite songs for us to hear? Let’s just talk about video games! Any video game you want, yes, even Destiny! But in any case, that’s all for now, folks! Jambuhbye!

More people to play Custom Robo for the GameCube. It's such a quirky game at points, but can also get pretty serious. The humor can get petty 4th wall breaking to at points. You are basically a newb bounty hunter that helps the citizens on odd jobs that the police don't take. You collect different robot parts such as guns, legs(more like leg attachments that boosts some stats or give bonus abilities.) you then have pods which can either be like small homing bombs or mortar cannons. There are also bombs which act more like you would think a mom would act, shoot and it blows up. The story is actually pretty interesting and sometimes when they have dialogue options it can be pretty funny if you choose some options and that's where some of the 4th wall breaking comes in. The over world is kinda like old FF games in the way where the maps are small and people follow you, but when you enter a location the map is as big as it should be. It's not a very big over world it feels more like small town, but it's still good. They're no voice acting instead it has different "beep" sounds or something that change based off of the sound of the character's voice and get louder or quieter based on their tone. It's pretty effective toilet the player here the emotions in the conversations without actually hearing voices. There is even a pretty decent end game after the story.

    • One thing I definitely do need to say about this week's video gaming is about possibly the 3DS's best game - Metroid: Samus Returns. I finally finished the game (and 100%ed it) tonight, and I have to say, it was great. Actual spoilers for the end of the game, because this was my favourite part:
That secret final boss battle was phenomenal. It was much more cinematic than I'm used to but it worked so damn well. Not only that, just as Samus Returns confirmed that Nintendo cared about Metroid again, this secret final boss confirmed something Nintendo have long denied - Metroid Prime is in fact, definitely, certainly 100% canon! Plus, and I'm not sure if Nintendo have ever denied this or not, but we now also know that definitely, certainly 100% Metroid Fusion is also canon! Gah, I love how this remake tied everything together so well!
Oh, and anyone who likes platform adventure games should definitely make sure to play this game!

I just recently finished Dark Souls 1 for the first time and damn it was a hell of a good ride. Can't believe I didn't get around to the souls series til somewhat recently. I've already beaten Dark Souls 3 and it's DLC, so all that's left is Dark Souls 2: Scholar if the First Sin. But, I think I might put that on the back burner for a while. I'm excited to finish the series, but I've started and not finished so many games (several being JRPG's) that I need to just pick a game and sit down and play it until it's done. I think the next game I play is going to be Chrono Trigger. I've played almost til the very end of the canon ending, but I never finished it because the rom I was emulating didn't want to work after that. So, I waited a bit, found out that the Steam port is pretty much fixed and works great, so I'm playing that (geez, this game is my favorite game of all time and I still haven't finished it wtf). After that, I think I'll go to Final Fantasy IX, which I picked up on switch upon release, and then Final Fantasy VII, which I've had on Steam fooorrrreeeeeeevvvvvveeeeeerrrrr.

          • I'm not so sure on a game recommendation, but I do think that everyone should try Breath of the Wild. It's an excellent game that really does deserve the praise it gets. But, I do think the dlc isn't needed for the full experience. As for a OST from a game that I think is excellent to listen to...hm, well I can think of one that is actually pretty good for relaxing. The theme for the trophy game in Smash Bros. Brawl is just something that I love to listen to. Putting aside my nostalgia for the OST, I think this theme is excellent for winding down and just relaxing in a chair. It's what I use as my arena theme in Smash Bros. Ultimate, just to relax after a match if it were to get exciting or intense lol.
Loving the posts Aifos! Keep up the excellent work!
• I’ve just finished Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (except for the final boss because f*ck him). It was an amazing game with all that FromSoftware magic. But man was it hard. It’s an emotionally draining and stressful game. I think now I need to play something casual and easy to counteract it.

I’ve gone back to roaming around in Absolver. The community now is incredibly small, but it’s full of a bunch of really cool people who are insanely knowledgeable about the game. The discord is full of people piecing together the lore and discussing different deck builds. The game itself is pretty fun and I absolutely love the art style.

                      • Oh man, I've been looking forward to this post! *ahem* While I won't match your topics one-to-one, I will at least match you in some. First, a short story of what I've been playing. Actual spoilers for FFVIII in the spoiler, though it's a 20 year old game now.
So, when I was growing up, I had a lot of issues in the home. Parents who didn't love each other, issues with school, etc. Video games were my escape, and one I gravitated to a lot was Final Fantasy VIII (big surprise right? It seems all I do is talk about these games, but where it not for VIII I likely wouldn't play games for anything more than a temporary escape.) I don't know what it was, but I related to Squall at least a little, felt alone in a world full of people. I was horrible at the game, mostly because I was young and didn't understand the mechanics of the game (I won't get into those now, or else I might fill up this post with technical vomit lol.) I played through the game at a slow pace, and eventually made it to a certain boss fight with the recurring characters Fujin and Raijin, the lackeys to one of the antagonists Seifer. This battle was hard for me. Like I said before, I didn't understand the mechanics of the game, so I could only be so strong. I struggled with this back to back boss fight, and eventually put the game down. I pick it back up in middle school, when depression hit me hard for the first time. I understand the mechanics now, and make it back to the fight. I barely win, after a few attempts, and the game crashes. I try again, the game crashes. I couldn't get past the same fight from my early childhood, for a different reason now. As such, again the game was put down. Cut to now, as I go through all the Final Fantasy games one by one, I finally hit FFVIII. An adult now, I know the mechanics and how to use them properly. As I get past the spot I was stuck at for most of my life, the 8 year old me and 13 year old me along with me are all interested to see where the story goes. 8yo me watches for Squall, 13 to see the things he only heard of, and I to finally see the end of a game that defined my childhood. As of 11:30 PM EST, 4/15/2019, I have finally beaten the game I love. It's not the best FF, not by a long shot. But it will always hold a special place in my heart. After my marathon is over, it will be one of the first I revisit. Also, anything after the revelation of Lunatic Pandora makes no sense. We have to let the evil sorceress come to the present so we can send her to the past, so that she can fulfill her goal of time compression, so we can go to the future to kill her! Excuse me what?
Whoooo boy, that went on a lot longer than I planned. Sorry about that. Anyway, OST? OST!!! This week I'll go with Eyes On Me, from Final Fantasy VIII - https://youtu.be/4qcW0oiLKHg Oh no, he's on this game again! That's twice in one post! Yeah sorry about that, but it's important to me, and I kind of need this today. I won't make a habit of it. I don't usually like stuff like this, but I'll be damned if this one doesn't get me for some reason. Next, games you probably haven't played. Since you mentioned the Dark Witch series (first game was great, never got around to the second), I'll talk about a similar series, called Rosenkreuzstilette (woah, what a name!) Like the Dark Witch games, these are like Megaman, though these are far more like a rip off, rather than inspired. This is just Megaman with witches and fairies instead of robots. I actually speedrun the second game, well I used to, but I plan on doing so again! They are a ton of fun if you like Megaman, containing two playable characters per game, one more like Megaman, and another melee styled character. They are only on PC, though they could probably run on a toaster if it had a screen. Man this got a lot longer than I thought it would, sorry about that again! If you made it through this, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, and I hope the RNGoddess blesses you with good rolls in the future!

I find that I have almost no time to game, and it's depressing. There's so many old games I want to replay. Borderlands just got remastered, and that's the game that started it all! Not my first game, but the first game I played completely in co-op with someone online. I want to experience that again. And with Borderlands 3 right around the corner I feel I just wont have the time to fully appreciate it.
• Some issues have resulted in less gaming and more trips to the hospital for my father, to say the least. I’ve mostly been spending the family bed time getting onto my computer to either play Warframe or another game. Sometimes I do Risk of Rain 2, but more recently I’ve been playing Tannenburg again. There’s a Wolf Truce event based on how wolf attacks got bold enough to force the German and Russian forces of the Eastern Front to work together against them. This is done by setting up a system where once a match wolves will spawn for about three minutes and go after whatever humans are closest to them. If the players can fend off the wolves without killing one another in the process, they are rewarded for maintaining a wolf truce of their own. Also, I wanna play more Risk of Rain 2

Calling him "cookie cutter white" and comparing him to white meat chicken is really unfair. Maybe Respawn are just fans of his work in Shameless and/or Gotham. I personally think he's 1 of maybe 2 things that are good about Gotham and therefor am excited to see how he does in a voice acting/mo-cap role. Fallen Order is like 1 of 2 games I'm legitimately excited for this year. 3 if Indivisible comes out in 2019.

The visuals are stunning, the storytelling is powerful, the music is phenomenal. If it doesn't turn up at the GOTY awards, I'll be very disappointed. This game stuck out to me so much that I made a post about it in December, but I feel it needs to be alked about more. As for my favourite moment, that's a tough call... Playing WoW as a teen was memorable. There was nothing out there to the scale of that game, and adventuring all hours of the night with my friends in awe of everything was really something else. I hold my first tournament win up there, too. Nothing can compare to that feeling - it was such a rush.

                                            • I made one of my friends annoyed by using a really trolly strategy with my monotype flying team with pokemon showdown: https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7monotype-891152835 He gets really mad when we play pokemon for some reason... Despite that, he still worked with me to test my idea for a new format: Little Cup Balanced Hackmons (LC BH). It combines the regulations of LC and BH. So it's possible to give any pokemon any move and almost any ability like in BH, but the only pokemon allowed are first-stage evolutions at level 5, using LC's banlist. Fixed damage moves are also banned (seismic toss, dragon rage, etc) as they are in LC, as using using one of those on something with such low HP would be broken. In battles it combines the fast pace of LC (mons tend to not last very long with the low HP and defensive stats) and the over-the-top craziness of BH. Here's a replay of that: https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7balancedhackmons-890074022 It isn't an official format yet, and I don't know who to contact to make it one, so we just did it in BH and set the levels of everything to 5. It was fun

                                                • ... Well recently I've been getting into ESO more, it's pretty fun, I've got tons of story stuff to work through tho, after I finish that stuff I'll probably buy more DLCs, just trying to meter it out so I don't get burned out too quickly, I like story based games and all but sometimes I get burned out pretty fast, besides that I'm downloading BLOPS 4 and Fallout 76 (I didn't pay for Fallout so don't @ me) and I'm gonna try those out, been playing with some new crucible builds in D****** the sequel, playing lots of Overwatch, finally got my second star, looking forward to Archives for Overwatch, and the Revelry for Density, other than that I haven't done much interesting gaming wise...
not included in the DLC
