I don't use this word lightly, but Overwatch is and was overrated. And I don't think it would have the popularity it's had if it was created by anyone other than Blizzard. I remember shortly after Overwatch released someone here made a post on why it was unfair to call the game overrated. Following is, roughly, the same response I gave back then, which did actually change their mind: You have to remember that Overwatch came out around the same time console games started getting more microtransactions. My first point is and was, while other games were being slated for their lootboxes, Overwatch got a free pass. While other games got slated for having no pve, no story mode, no singleplayer, Overwatch got a free pass. While other games got slated for oversexualisation of female characters, Overwatch got a free pass. And I still believe this lack of criticism is almost entirely because the game was made by Blizzard (just remember that this was before "don't you have phones?") Also, I can't remember which other games released in 2016, but I do remember being very angry that Overwatch won at the game awards over Dark Souls 3.
