I completely agree with your reasoning. I also invested a few thousands of hours in this franchise since 2014 and it's really frustrating watching how quickly Bungie moved back to it's old hubris and arrogant attitude after Forsaken launch. They started D2 with a mix of casual and PvP oriented philosophy that 100% failed in both sides. Then they searched advice with streamers and youtubers and changed course to the complete opposite, a hardcore, sweaty, ultra grindy philosophy that only pleases the small amount of hardcore and no lifer players of this game. They seem to be unwilling to find a middle-ground for Destiny 2, like they did with Destiny 1. I agree that this move will only make more and more players leave the game, which makes me also wonder if they are not just letting Destiny die and their next game will be something completely different.

That being said I could see them not wanting to fracture their player base even more and have more of a draw to their new game. This might help with that but at the same time damage their brand loyalty.
