Why The Moon Could Still Be A Threat.

Until the emergence of the Dreadnought during the Taken War, the Moon, Crota's Temple and surrounding regions were the bastion of our resident Hive broods. In Destiny 2, however we have seen neither hide nor hair of the Lunar Hive. Has anything changed lore-wise? Or logically are the Hive just crippled after the events of D1? I believe that the Moon is still a stronghold for the Hive in Sol. Although they lost their major leadership, the Lunar Hive had still continued to be a threat to the City up to the Red War. And with the reproductive swiftness of the Hive, who knows how many thousands have been bred since we set foot there. Now one very likely explanation would be that the Red Legion have killed or are fighting the Hive on the Moon. In Vanilla D2 it is suggested that perhaps the Legion had wiped out the Fallen on Venus, Mars, and yes, the Moon. If this is the case then they would have inevitably came into conflict with the Hive at the Hellmouth. If they are/were at war with the Hive then the Legion has/have not likely not won their fight. The Hive are ancient and powerful and have no shortage of abominations which could cause enough damage to the Legion or the City without it having to be the next Taken King. Our best case scenario logically is that the Red Legion is locked in a war of attrition with the Lunar Broods, therefore slowing down the Hive and Cabal warmachines. Our most optimistic scenario would be that the Legion won against the Hive and now that the Legion is destabilized them maybe the Moon is safe... But the most likely scenario is that the Hive that come from the Moon (particularly those wizards...) are still powerful and capable of horrors. Compared to the state of Titan and Mars, the Moon is likely the most infested site in the system outside the Dreadnought itself. Because while Titan is infested, they don't have deep, arcane dungeons and temples to help fuel their strength like they do on the Moon; and Mars has little seeding in it due to the fact that the Grasp of Nokris was trapped under ice for years. If the Moon Hive have not been dispersed by the Red Legion (which I find likely), then we very well may have a Hive super power in our backyard once more. And if so, they've had time to prepare.

      • Malok was a taken when he took the shrine of oryx and seeing how he is also the son of Savathun, he might have had a greater purpose like his sister Dul Incaru in the dreaming city. during the strike it looked like he reactivated the shrine using a taken blight. I believe that in the original d1 story it was being used for oryx to oversee the resurrection of Crota. I think Savathun tried to have Malok take oryx’s throne for her like what variks said he was trying to do in the April update, but we stopped him from doing that. In the opening to the Blighted Chalice strike, Eris says that he “fled” to the shrine of oryx. This could have been Malok going to the nearest location to communicate with Savathun to tell her that the dreadnaught is lost. Also this was one year before Uldren Sov was hearing voices on mars, which we now know was riven, who was under control of the Quria and Savathun, and Quria could’ve forsaw us killing riven and beginning the curse. Putting Dul incaru into play in Savathuns plan.

      • I agree with another commenter. I believe the Dreadnought will be re-purposed by Oryx's sister Savathun, and the moon will be a front-line base to launch all-out offensives against the Earth. It makes sense how we haven't gone up there to try and retake it. The city is still, a year and a half later, still recovering from the utter obliteration at the hands of the Legion. Also the fact that thanks to the disaster of the Thunderlord, Eris Morn's fireteam, and the pure horrors Crota brought about, it's no wonder Zavala is hesitant to go back up there. He's made it clear back in Warmind and in Forsaken that we may keep winning, but Ghaul ripped us a new one, and we still need to play the defensive. Savathun had better be one of the best villains we've had. She's had more than enough build up, since all the way back in the Taken King with Eris obeying her(I believe now that when she meant "Queen" in the epilogue cutscene, it wasn't Mara, it was Savathun. Would make sense due to the fact that Savathun wanted Oryx taken out, and is a trickster. Easily could have manipulated Eris.)

          • I couldn't help but take your title a little too literally, and I was wondering how the moon would actially be a threat? As soon as you mentioned the dreadnought it became obvious! Universe: pool table Moon: cue ball Dreadnought: cue I assume that the rest of the post details how earth is to be sent into some black hole (pocket)?? Seriously though, I do miss the old areas, and I do hope the game will being us back!

What was our reasoning for not blowing up the dreadnought again? or pushing it into a decaying orbit in Saturn?

                        • I’d see that the Red Legion would’ve taken extra precautions in taking the last safe city. We know from the Ana Bray comic (yes I know shush) that the Cabal had Troops on mars to take it when they hit the city. It wouldn’t be all that surprising they might’ve nuked some of the Hive’s tunnels in the moon to prevent them from claiming their prize.

                        • I'm not saying blow up the moon, just blow all of the tunnels enough that the moon hive won't be doing much except digging for a lonnnnng time.

                        • I think the reason why we aren’t on the moon is the same reason why we aren’t at the cosmodrome. The vanguard has placed it under quarantine, stating that if we went there, we would get no support. Though maybe the vanguard has received intel on the state of the moon and the hive, and have placed it at a higher security level, or something like that

                          • House Exile has been radio silent since the Red War. Fallen comms on Luna, Mars and Venus are gone. The House of Wolves undoutably abandoned Mars to join up with Dusk, same for Winter on Venus, save for a small sect starving out in the Reef. But Exile? They're bitter. Wounds from being discarded by those you were loyal to never close for Eliksni. Something wiped them out, and I'm not sure it was Cabal. If Red Legion were engaged with the Hive on Luna, they'd have established a base of operations there. We only know of four locations that the Cabal occupy. Nessus, Venus, Mars and Earth. Something is stirring on the Moon. Something dark, and cunning. Something that knows Sol isn't paying attention to them.
