If the “brightest and best” that destiny has to offer, along with google can’t solve this ridiculous puzzle someone needs to be asking “is this puzzle poorly designed?”
Like you said one room, shooting symbols for 24hrs is the dumbest thing I’ve seen in gaming since COD started selling a red dot for a dollar. (Not that long ago then)

It may actually be the worst fumble I’ve seen in the games I follow. Since the boat has sailed on this puzzle, I just hope they are pulling together a team to make sure that the rest of their roadmap has nothing even remotely like this blocking the primary content.
