How fast should a Metroidvania open up?

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from Castlevania, where.. Well, frankly I’m kinda lost.. But, that’s besides the point! I want to talk about Metroidvanias! Particularly, how quickly you think they should open up. Let’s take a step back. If you were to plop a player into a Metroidvania game where they already had all their power ups it would, for all intents and purposes, just be an open world platformer game, with all the pitfalls and advantages that comes with. Mostly just pitfalls. Instead, Metroidvanias steadily open up their large interconnected worlds over time. As you’re walking along, you might find a platform just out of your reach, or a path that’s a little to small, and as you progress down the path you can tread, you’ll get abilities such as double jump, or turning into a chicken. You can then use this nifty new ability to go down new pathways and open up the world. But, different developers open up the world at different paces. In Hollow Knight, the game opens up relatively slow, gradually speeding up to open the entire world in the second half of the game. Momodora leaves almost the entire map explorable from the start, with only two levels actually sealed off. So, my question is simple. How fast do you like a Metroidvania to open up? Got an example? Tl;dr? Here’s my point! How fast do you prefer a Metroidvania to open up? My answer:
I’m a fan of the slower ones, like Hollow Knight. When a game opens up to quickly, I find it can be a little oveewhelming, and you’re a lot more likely to get lost, and/or not get enough time with your new powers to really understand the telltale signs of when to use them.
That’s all for now, folks! Jambuhbye!

    • the pacing should be gradual each boss fight introduces a new mechanic or weapon that lets you interact with the world in a new way this way when you receive said power ups the dungeon or what have you that your enjoying becomes that more enticing to explore not so much forcing you to but enticing you to go back and explore.

I prefer slow, as it encourages exploring the world around you and looking for secrets and such. It also feels much more rewarding to find something.
quak
• Slowly, like Castlevania SOTN. Also, speaking of Metroidvania's, is anyone else looking forward to the upcome Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night?

            • Slowly. It should, like Super Metroid does in most cases, give you a progress-expanding ability or tool after each boss fight. Or, for a different but similar approach, at around the same time interval as it would do if it was given after each boss fight. I've never been sure how Castlevania is at all similar to Metroid though. To me it's just a 2D adventure game, and I don't understand at which point you unlock things and places. That hasn't happened in the Castlevania games I played.

              • I have to admit I’m more of a “watch a dude play a metroidvania” than a “play a metroidvania” kind of fellow, but the way I see it a metroidvania should probably be something like the earlier stages of fractal tree. Go linear until one or two bosses die, then open a branch or two. Continue until you either run out of bosses, maps, or upgrades that can affect travel.

I love the way it was handled in Super Metroid. For the most part, the map gradually opens up until probably about halfway-ish through the main game (whenever you get power bombs). However, the game is, purposely, very susceptible to sequence breaking, so you can access parts of the game that you're not supposed to get to yet. It allows players who have played the game before and wish for a new experience to egt just that, a new experience.

                  • I know that Terraria does this with the Dungeon and the Jungle Temple. I find it to be quite cool since the map suddenly becomes a host for more and more and even more chaos as you gain better gear. You go from simple exploring to fighting Cthulhu’s brother.
