Nation “Too Broke” for Universal Healthcare to Spend $406 Billion More on F-35
The nation’s most expensive weapons program isn’t done showing U.S. taxpayers how much it will ultimately cost them, with Bloomberg reporting Monday that the F-35 fighter jet budget is now predicted to jump by a cool $27 billion. “Think about [F-35’s] $405 billion price tag when a family member dies of a preventable disease. Get angry.” Though the estimated future cost of the program had previously hovered at a mind-boggling $379 billion, an updated draft that could be submitted to Congress as early as today will reportedly exceed $406 billion—a nearly 7 percent increase. The new cost increases may come as a hit to President Donald Trump, who has bragged about his ability to get weapons manufacturers to offer the Pentagon “better deals.” Others simply pointed out how ridiculous it is that a weapons program so fraught with failures is allowed to receive such outlandish funding when lawmakers—mostly Republicans, but also many Democrats—continue to argue that the nation is “too broke” to increase spending on social programs that improve education or healthcare. The original cost of the program was $233B, which is $721 per person for a year. The average healthcare costs for a person in Canada, is $4,506. Also keep in mind that the Pentagon has estimated that over the lifetime of the aircraft they’ll spend over a trillion dollars on the program. A number that keeps going up as the costs continue to overrun and does not include retrofits, modernization, or upgrades; just maintenance.
Sad.

  • You know what else is sad? Constantly talking about the social security program going belly-up with no solution in sight and continuing to provide some of the worst care to our nation's military veterans while at the same time ensuring that those on welfare receive their checks, no matter what.

    • Sorry but the only thing sad here is you You and I have been over this before and here you are months later continuing the drivel. The cost of the planes is still less than the cost of universal healthcare for California alone let alone the entire USA.

      • I would honestly be fine with universal healthcare, but, I would want to be able to opt out of it, I would also like the U.S. to cut military spending, and for the U.S. to stop giving so much money to NATO.

Not entirely related but some fun facts. The end goal with the f-35 is to be our primary strike bomber. I’m not sure what else I’m allowed to share, but the F-35 is going to play a major role in our offense and defense.
not a counter argument or anything just felt like sharing
The F-35 program is a good example of why I'd be hesitant to push universal health care in the US right now. It's been a terrible program for American taxpayers, but it's still politically and financially advantageous for a lot of politicians to keep Lockheed Martin happy. We'd have the same problem with Universal health care; it'd be advantageous to a lot of politicians to keep certain drug companies happy. One of the biggest ways universal health care systems save money is by taking advantage of the strong position that comes with being able to negotiate contracts on behalf of an entire country. When you're dealing with that much volume for, say, drug companies or medical device manufacturers, you can really push for them to lower prices. I have no confidence that would be the case here. I think instead politicians would be using that negotiating power to draw bigger campaign contributions. I'm concerned that campaign finance reform needs to be addressed before universal health care can become a reality here.

      • The F35 is trash. No only did they fail at their primary goal (Make a single multitool aircraft. They made 3 variants that require different fuel, and aren't even the same size.) You can buy 5 A10 Thunderbolt CAS planes for 1 F35. And the A10 is a GOOD plane. That has twice as much stuff on it as there needs to be, for redundancy. Not to increase the bill.

          • I would love to see some kind of successful universal health care system, but you just can't ignore how dangerous the world still is. Countries depend on us for security, money, weapons, etc. You can't do that without an up to date air force. China, Russian, North Korea are all threats.........and they aren't sitting back depending on 90's technology on their armed forces. Sure, these military programs are over priced and cash cows to the wrong people, but what makes you think a single payer health care system would be any different. It will be run by the same minded people. It's also not just money, it's the numbers. Do we even have enough doctors, hospitals, nurses, workers to handle 300+ million people? Have you been to the hospital in OC lately? Have you seen the waits? How about urgent care?

Ok Max, I gotta ask, considering how poorly this government handles everything else, do you really think they can manage healthcare correctly? Serious question.

                • I don’t have an opinion on healthcare. But we really need to pay our teachers more. They get paid like shit and a lot of them end up not putting effort into their job because they have to go to another one after school. And teaching takes a lot of time and energy. If we pay them more then more people will want to be teachers we cane get highly skilled and trained teacher to help our students. The average pay for a teacher at my school is $45,00 per year. This is in an area where houses prices are between $200,00-$600,00.

Two things: 1) Boy is it a real shame nobody has ever come up with a universal healthcare system that is not single-payer
Though I will admit the other systems still have heavy government intervention
2) Despite ripping most of the content from the linked Bloomberg article Bloomsmag still gets the headline wrong (nation is spending $27 billion more for a total of $406 billion). The flow/editing of the article seemed weird in general, so I checked out the site's about page, presented without comment:
Bloomsmag, one of the best site in all over the world, Bloomsmag is all about to entartainment and latest news worldwide. bloomsmag have more than 30 employs and very hard working. we are providing news article on daily basis. Also, we are provding game and sports news at one spot.
• Too bad universal healthcare would be about as well managed as any other government entity. Aka it isn't. Remember how the government shutdown ruined public servant's wages? Now think of that but with everybody's healthcare. I mean if you'd rather place your faith in a system that you already don't think represents you be my guest.
