Doom of the Dragons, Part Two: On the Count of Three

Greetings, Guardians, here's part two of Doom of the Dragons! Here's part one if you missed it! As usual, if you like it, give it a bump, and I'll get more out soon! Stay classy, Guardians! “So. What do you think?” Cupun peeked over the hill, and looked at the Fallen down below. They had all gathered around a glimmer drill, which hung in the air. Several servitors prowled among them. He lowered his head back down, holding his pulse rifle close to his chest. “Almost fifty down there,” the Titan said. “But it doesn’t look like they’re expecting trouble.” Lyra shrugged. “So,” she said. “Pretty good odds, all things considered.” Her white armor flashed in the sunlight. Cupun smiled. “I’d say so.” “You and I have very different definitions of ‘good odds,’” Kim grumbled. The warlock shook his head. “Ah, who cares about ‘good odds?’” Marcella said. She pulled her hood over her helmet, and put her knife back in its sheath. “We gonna crash this party or what?” Kim sighed, and racked his shotgun. “Why not?” he said. “Alright then,” Cupun said. “On three.” He gripped his pulse rifle tighter. “One. Two.” Suddenly, he broke cover, and ran down the hill towards the Fallen below. Kim glanced at Marcella disparagingly. “I hate it when he does that.” Marcella shook her head. “So?” she asked. “You gonna let him have all the fun?” Then, she ran down after him, with Lyra close behind. Kim shook his head. “Titans and hunters,” he muttered. “I’ll never understand them.” Then, he ran down the hill as well. Kim caught his first foe - a dreg - by surprise. Sliding down the hill, he took aim with his shotgun, and punched a fist-sized hole in its chest. Then he took aim at an incoming Vandal, and pulled the trigger. The alien went flying backwards. Then, Kim turned around, and seared the dreg that had been sneaking up on him with a blast of void light. Meanwhile, Marcella was making her own contribution to the fight. She grabbed an advancing Captain, and pulled it close. Before it could respond, she positioned her hand cannon underneath his chin, and fired one round into his skull. The Captain went limp. Marcella then used him as a body shield, and fired her cannon over his shoulder. Meanwhile, Lyra and Cupun fought as a team. The two titans stood back to back, fighting in synchronization. Cupun switched from target to target, letting loose with his pulse rifle. Lyra sprayed at targets with her auto-rifle, unfazed by the incoming enemy fire. She suddenly manifested a sentinel shield, and flung the flaming purple light at the Fallen. It ricocheted off of five of their adversaries before finally dissolving in a blast of void energy. “Reloading!” Cupun shouted. He dropped a barrier in front of him, and ducked down. He quickly ejected the old mag, and popped in a new clip. Then, he looked over the shield, and began firing again. The whole process had taken him less than a second. “Switch!” Lyra said. She and Cupun switched positions, and she ducked behind his wall to reload. By now, the Fallen had been decimated; more than half of them were dead. However, the remainder of the Fallen had rallied together, taking cover behind the drill equipment. Marcella tossed an incendiary grenade over one of the barriers. The grenade exploded, and several Fallen came running out from behind the barrier, their bodies on fire. The Guardians quickly put them out of their misery. “Cupun!” his ghost shouted. “They’re calling in reinforcements!” “Good,” Cupun growled. Suddenly, a dark shape appeared overhead. “Not quite sure if I agree,” the ghost said. Cupun looked up to see that a skiff was hovering overhead. Attached to its underbelly was a massive Devil Walker. Standing underneath it was Kim. “Shit!” Cupun killed another dreg, and then shouted, “Kim! Watch out!” Kim looked up at the skiff just in time to see the walker detach itself from the skiff. The warlock only just barely rolled out of the way. But the Walker wasn’t done with Kim yet. It took aim, and blasted its repeaters at the Warlock. Kim ran, keeping ahead of the deadly volleys as the ground behind him exploded as the blue bolts hit the ground. The Fallen, suddenly rallied by the sight of the Walker, leaped out from behind their cover, and fired on the Guardians. “Fall back!” Marcella shouted. The Guardians quickly ran back up the hill they’d run down only moments before. They took cover behind the ridge as the walker blasted at them. “Well this is just great,” Kim said. He carefully fed several more rounds into his shotgun. Marcella sighed. “We need a plan,” she said. “How are we taking that thing down?” Cupun thought for a moment. “Alright,” he said. “Kim, Marcella? You two rush out and try to distract that thing. Kill some of those Fallen while you’re at it. Me and Lyra will flank around, and try to take it from behind.” “There a reason we’re the bait?” Kim asked lamely. “Just do it!” Kim winced as an explosion sent dirt flying over their heads. “Fine,” he said. “I always do enjoy being the bait.” “Don’t look so down, Kim!” Marcella said. “Try and have some fun for once in your life!” “Am I the only one here whose definition of fun doesn’t involve being shot at?” “Well, then why does it happen to you so much?” Lyra chided. Kim racked his shotgun once more. “Occupational hazard of hanging out with you three.” He looked at Marcella. “Ready?” She grinned under her helmet. “Thought you’d never ask.” The two Guardians ran over the hilltop, and the sound of gunshots quickly followed. “They sound very distracted,” Lyra said. “Agreed,” Cupun said. “Now let’s go!” The two Guardians ran along the hilltop, before sliding down it. Sure enough, Kim and Marcella had the Fallen occupied, dodging rounds from the walker while simultaneously taking potshots at the Fallen. “Alright,” Lyra said. “Now what?” “What do you think?” he asked. “Now, we shoot.” He quickly grabbed the grenade launcher off his back. “Aim for the back-right leg.” “Hold on,” Lyra said. She readied her sniper rifle. “Okay.” “Need a perch?” Cupun asked, smiling under his helmet. He could almost feel Lyra smiling back at him. “You say the sweetest things,” she said. Cupun knelt down. He felt Lyra position the barrel of her rifle on his shoulder. “Good,” she said. “Much more stable.” Cupun took aim with his launcher. “On three,” he said. “One. Two -“ Lyra’s rifle fired. Cursing, Cupun began firing as well. “That’s for earlier!” Lyra shouted. Regardless, it did the trick. The combined volleys hit the machine’s rightmost leg. After a couple seconds, it exploded from the assault. The Walker suddenly collapsed, and the orange core suddenly became visible. Cupun quickly refilled his launcher, and fired at the core. He heard Lyra do the same. Suddenly, the core retracted back into the Walker, and the machine stirred to life. Cupun’s launcher went dry. Cursing, he switched to his pulse rifle, but the walker was already turning around to engage these new foes. For a fifty ton piece of metal, this thing moves pretty fast, Cupun thought. Suddenly, he saw a red laser appear at his feet. He looked up, and realized that the main gun of the walker was pointed directly at them. “Shit.” The walker fired. “No!” Marcella shouted. The explosion from the dust kicked up a cloud of dust. But then, as the wind blew it away, she could make out a titan barrier, with a shadow figure standing behind it. “Whoo-hoo!” Marcella looked up, and saw Cupun flying up into the air. How and why, she couldn’t imagine. The latter question was answered almost immediately. Cupuns’ body began radiating with arc energy. Lightning danced on his armor as he lifted his fists in the air, and traveled downwards, landing directly on top of the walker. The top of the walker crumpled under the force of Cupun’s assault, and he continued down, smashing through electronics and hardware. Then, he leapt out, his body still covered in blue lightning. The Walker took two shambling steps forwards, before finally collapsing, and then exploding. Cupun walked up to her, the arc energy fading. “What are we waiting for?” he asked. “Let’s finish off these bastards!” Marcella grinned. “Thought you’d never ask.” She turned towards the Fallen, who were howling with rage at the destruction of their Walker. She lifted her hand cannon. It was time to finish this fight. Part Three: The Race
