D1 PvP was very chaotic and was played VERY heavily for 3 straight years by casual players, hardcore players, and competitive streamers. (They even had tournaments.) The reason the chaotic imbalance was ok is because it made D1 PvP unique and fun. It wasn't just like every other fast ttk PvP out there. I mean hell Call of Duty freaking copied D1 supers if that tells you anything about it's success. It wasn't balanced but it was fun. It allowed for a variety of weapons and playstles. It wasn't perfect but it definitly achieved longevity. Changing it completely to a slow paced one size fits all borefest was a terrible decision. I think everybody hoped they had learned from the past 3 years and figured out how to reel the balance in a bit while still giving us that fast paced chaotic fun PvP we loved for 3 years.

  • You say heavily but did you watch it slowly drop from the most played lists? As I said, chaotic pvp does not last, going balanced doesn't make it last either as D2 will soon find out but it holds up better if done correctly. Bungie hasn't done a proper balanced pvp in over ten years so I'm not surprised with how the last few games of theirs has played out. Destinys longevity still needs to actually prove itself anyways, can it hold up years down the road consistently game after game or will people tire of it at some point. Furthermore destiny didn't inspire CoD with the abilities, the games (destiny 1 and Bo3) launched a year apart, one relies on the abilities, the other doesn't and uses it as a gimmick. That also doesn't take into consideration halo and CoD were doing this years before destiny was even a thing, destiny simply took it to "space magic" while the other two kept it more realistic. Matter is both games pvp aren't going to hold up long term, it's why Bungie has changed it to begin with and I bet D3 will do its own thing as well.
