A decent sportsman is respectful, yes.
There is often a "banter" before the competition, but this is usually for the benefit of the public and the hype.
Doing that for yourself is pretty sad.

You must have seen it yourself, people looking to prove themselves to be physically (and psychologically) tougher than the other. In pro sports it's more extreme because of the money and glory involved. And if anything pro athletes are going to be less "sporting" and decent than the average bod because of how ruthless it must be at the top.

A [i]good[/i] athlete wouldn't try and injure their opponent to get an advantage, they would probably be more disappointed with an injury because the competition would become unfair, and the outcome tainted. But, comparing a crappy unbalanced fps shooter to pro athletes is probably wandering a long way from "relevant"..

People, athletes included, just aren't that chivalrous.
