No Man's Sky is one of the few that actually took advantage of the preorder system and screwed over the gamers. They adopted the carnival model and left town when the game dropped. I haven't seen any big company do so and it's hard to say whether preorders actually affect the outcome of the game.
Although, from a psychological standpoint, if you only get paid for a finished product, you're less likely to cut corners but on the antithesis, partial income during the build time may motivate you even more to produce quality.
All in all, the cup is either half empty or half full depending on if you have a negative a positive view point and that determines your sentimental value. If you like what you see, preorder. If not, just call it a day and await the next.
