It's because y1 things were hard to get and the grind was real. People were leaving because the grind was too much for them so bungie brought 3 of coins into play. Destiny 2 will start off the same I bet. The 1st raid will be awesome! 3 years later people will cry but all in all I spent a lot of hours with friends having a good time and that's what matters the most to me.
