Do you think those people that help have some sort of childhood reason for it?

As in what may have happened in their past to look to help others, whatever they feel whether its duty or the will to help because of morals or because they can't stand to see others where they once laid? Do people help because they're good or because they think they owe something to society? Or because they feel guilty? Maybe they did something to someone in the same position before and they made it their wish to change their ways and help and try to put a mask on that experience.

Well I want to help society because I've been very fortunate in my life, and I feel like anyone who has the opportunities I do should use them for a greater good. Hopefully allowing others to realize opportunities and overall more good things happening. I don't see why someone would not want to positively affect the world. I mean, I suppose they could feel one of three emotions. They could be apathetic to it all, which I would perceive as selfish. They could be unwilling, which means that they'll be the sheep, or they could just generally want to see negativity in the world, which will find its way to them easily.

      • I work for Doctors without Borders. I chose to help ANY ONE. Because of religious deficit, societal ignorance, and the fact that shit isnt great for people who are passive victims of money and territorial pissing ( thanks Nirvana), i felt compelled to at least make a few people feel cared for.

        • I help others because I know that some people are dealt a shitty hand, or life springs them some unfortunate surprises. I also know that, while "help" is an intangible thing, putting it into my community raises us all up, even if we don't see its effects immediately. We are only as strong as our weakest links, and I don't win anything by letting others suffer. Life isn't a zero-sum game.

          • I have several friends with depression who talk to me about it. Not because they came to me, but because I can see it and know that they need someone to talk to. I think I've managed to support a lot of people. The reason I do it? Because I'm happy. I've never once felt depressed in my life. I have a really positive outlook on life and living and people in general. So when I see people who can't see that, who think so little of themselves, that want to hurt themselves... I feel like it's an obligation to help them. Because if I'm at the top of the world, I should be helping others get there too.

I help people because I've met depression. I've gone through physical and mental torture. I've experienced things that would make most people snap if they were in my situation. I've suffered quite a lot in life. I know what it's like to have everything you love taken away from you. With that, I try to help others. I strive to. It's simply that I don't want to see others experience the same feelings I've experienced.

I help others because it feels like my duty to as a person who is more fortunate and able. Sure, it may be to convince myself or others that I'm a good person, but it's a nice feeling to be respected and appreciated. Also, I have all I want in my own life so helping others isn't detrimental to me.

              • Having been the target of intense bullying as a child and at the same time dealing with adult people who did little to hide their own ineptitudes; an alcoholic, a serial liar, and one whom I suspect was a prostitute or drug dealer, I've always been drawn to helping other people. I'll take a punch for someone I don't know or barely know just to stick it to a person who is bullying. I'd rather that bully lose out on the satisfaction of holding power than see another person hurt physically or mentally because someone else doesn't know how to handle a problem. By 7, I had a ton of real life problems and knowledge a 7 year old shouldn't have. I fought the adult situations with as much child-like ignorance as I could but it wasn't enough to combat the mental scarring. I've been beaten, name called, forced to walk miles in the rain due to flat tires with a man who would buy whiskey before an emergency tire, lied to, used, and frankly it's not as fun as you'd think it might be. It made helping people, especially with easy to manage little problems, a honed skill. It's great to say or do just the right thing to someone in need. I don't need a reward. Their safety is my reward. Although, depending on the activity a soda would be nice.

                • I feel like I help people because I want to return the favor for others (not necessarily the same person) helping me in the past. Also, it feels nice knowing I did something decent or worth remembering for once.

I just feel like it is the right thing to do. Like an actual feeling. It bugs the living shit out of me if I pass someone by who could use some help. It is frustrating as all hell sometimes.
