I've never played Zelda in my life...

So up until recently, about a week ago, I saw the trailer for Breath of the Wild, and at first I thought it looked interesting. However, I have never played a Zelda game in my life. I know many people praise this series as one of the best, but I just never got around to playing it l, mostly because I wasn't interested. Now, after seeing the reviews come in, with 9s and 10s everywhere, and after actually watching the trailer multiple times, I want to give the series a try, but I'm worried that I won't understand the story, and I surely won't get to experience the nostalgic factor I've seen many people talk about. I have a WiiU and a 3ds, should I give this series a try, and if so, should I play the older ones first or just hop in into BotW?

On the surface, they can be standalone games, enjoyed by anyone. You can learn things from it that you'll probably see and understand more easily in another game. You'll have a better understanding of how the entire series works by playing one of the more recent games, excluding the first one. If you've played all the games, there's a lot of hidden easter eggs throughout all the games that make some of them tie into each other. Online research can always answer any questions that may come up during your playthrough. Personally having not played Breath of the Wild, I don't know how the story works, so it could follow suit or be an exception.
