It would be interesting, and give new player insight into the evolution of Destiny, if we could set what patch level we want to play at. Want to see what it was like in year 1? Set the patch level in a private match? Same if you wonder what it was like before Hammer of Sol or Tripmines were nerfed.
Assuming the weapon and player data files could easily be swapped out to get the target patch level, this would not be hard.
And if this is only in private matches, it is not something that would be forced on people.
Finally, if Bungie see people going back and playing particular patch levels, it might give them some insight in to what people miss and might be worth bring back.
Edit: A few people have commented on how hard this would be to do. I have an idea on this...
If all the weapons, armor, etc are in individual data file, have a directory of data files for each patch. When you play a game, the game is hosted by one of the players, not on a Bungie server and the map and data are completely reloaded each game. So when the person hosting the custom match sets the game type and map, they could also select a patch level and then it would load the data files for the guns and armor from the directory for that patch.
The obvious downside is that Destiny would take a lot more space on your system.

If you want y1 lethality with y2 balance... 1. Start a private match and enable light level. 2. Drop the light of your ghost and artifact, bringing your light to level 315. Make sure your weapons are 400. Hand cannons 2 shot, red death two shots, Suros works...

U -blam!-ing morons. People since ALPHA asked for CUSTOM games, NOT PRIVATE. Custom means you can manipulate EVERYTHING. Ever wanted to fire a fully auto ghorn in which the wolfpacks leave a solar flare behind? "Craft" one in a custom game mode. Allow players to make maps, but only with the assets of the expansion they have bought. So theres the pvp enticement for buying the next expansion. But nooooooooo........inbreds flocked and congregated to rub bungies peter off. Mind as well swallow a grenade and hig my wife........

Terrible idea. You have absolutely no technical knowledge on what it takes to maintain a service like this. Never mind the time and manpower (that they don't have) to implement something like this. God you millennials that think you can just throw a switch and do things.
-
Love this. It'll never happen though : (
-
It would take up space and loading time in order to do this although it would be a dream I don't think any one would play it enough to actually warnt it being put in.
-
This is a very dumb idea!
-
That is technically impossible... You do know what a patch is and what it does to the game, right?
-
Love the idea but with how bungie is lately with not one word about weapon balances major changes and what's to come good luck hopefully they actually read this and consider it

Edited by iDovahBear: 1/18/2017 6:05:00 PMEasier way to do this would be to allow us to manipulate weapon stats in private matches only. Sort of like how in Halo you could tweak overshield or ammo or anything like that. But it would get much too complicated. I love this idea because it has a very practical use: People who hate Bungie's meta can move away from it, but unfortunately it would be very tedious to implement. It would take as much Developer attention as something like Forge mode. Perhaps this should be incorporated into any future Forge mode plans? That's the only way I see it happening, and even then . . .

Wouldn't really take up more space. Destiny updates just add more content, not take away old content. We could technically have Y1 back...
-
This is a nice idea but it would require Bungie to support all versions of the game simultaneously, which would require a disgusting amount of resources.
-
This is an awesome idea that would probably take a disgusting amount of dev effort to implement.
-
Why not just make it year one again it was better that way
-
Doing that would just aid people that have not paid their due's. Most of us have been in a grind for the ability to be compete and win. What your asking for is a free pass when many of us have dedicated our time to gain the level, reward's and reputation. I would agree to seeing something happen like that if it was set up to gain the skill's needed to become competitive with out reward's of any type or raise your light level. That said, I'm border line sucking at it. But I am putting the time in for reward's and skill's need to win and getting better.

Technically not impossbile, just really difficult. They'd essentially have to run a dedicated servers running off each version of the game to be accessed. We can't get dedicated servers for regular PvP. They'd never do it for private. Besides, everyone would play beta/vanilla meta.. maybe HoW
-
This is too difficult to happen.
-
That doesn't seem feasible to me.
-
Yeah that's not possible.
-
i read the title as if it were a 'custom marriage' proposal in destiny
-
I'd love to play in the HoW era again. This would be really hard to code though wouldn't it?
-
Hammer hell fire!!! Bump
-
That would be amazing but i dont even want to think about what they would have to do to make that happen
-
Taken King launch please.

Edited by albinomachina: 1/18/2017 2:58:09 AMThat would be great. I'm sure there'd be enough people wanting to play on the vanilla settings that I would be able to use my Vex again. Too bad it's impossible to implement though.
