Merry Christmas you bast*rds. Now you know.
I Remember "It snuck up like a desert wind. I got a feeling I won't feel again. When faith abandons me I hope it does it honestly. I still howl like an animal in the darkness And I'm reminded by the blood on my clothes. I can't stand what I've become. I'm shivering despite the sun. We come together and were overwhelmed by the loneliness. I want oblivion all the time" -Every Time I Die Christmas Day, Seven Years Ago, Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA, Alternate Earth "Cody can you come in here and cut the ham for me please? I need to get the potatoes." Came a polite shout from the kitchen, Danielle Wolfe. "Of course." Cody Wolfe stood up from his seat in the living room by the Christmas tree, and walked into the kitchen to help his wife finish making Christmas dinner. They usually ate earlier, around 2:30-ish on Christmas Day, it was just tradition. Jackson sat calmly on the couch, looking at the knife his father had given him for Christmas. The Bowie was beautiful, a typical and yet brilliant knife. It had belonged to Jackson's grandfather, and had been passed down to his father, and then to himself. It had seen combat in the jungles of Vietnam, the deserts of the Middle East, and the urban fights in Dubai during the Third World War. Jackson felt it strange to be holding the blade that had been used to kill, strange that it had been given as a gift to him. Sliding it into its leather sheathe, he stood up from the couch, and trotted upstairs to put the knife away. He knew dinner would be ready soon, and he was looking forwards to the ham. Just the smell alone had his mouth watering. Meanwhile, in the kitchen, his mother and father jested, Cody cutting the ham, Danielle stirring the mashed potatoes. "I think you made his Christmas, honey. He hasn't put the knife up since you gave it to him." She said, a smile gracing her face, her blonde hair back in a ponytail. Cody carried on cutting, slicing a piece of ham off and eating it. Unbeknownst to the family, a black Suburban had stopped in front of the their home, windows tinted, no license plates. A single man exited the vehicle, dressed in black. He headed straight for the door of the home before him. "I don't know sometimes. He's interested in it, but I don't know if he appreciates it or if he's confused as to why I gave it to him. You know, I don't think he's ever going to look at me the same way again after what I told him." "I told you that it wasn't going to help anything. I know it's for the best, but he doesn't seem to be handling it well." Danielle replied. "I know teens are supposed to be distant, but it seems like he's almost hostile... I didn't want to drive him away, I just wanted to be straightforward with him, but in comparison to what I was afraid was going to happen, this is nothing. I thought I was going to lose both of you. I thought you were going to take him and run." Cody said, looking over to her. "Honey, I'm never going to stop loving you. We all make mistakes, we've all done horrible things, but you didn't just leave the impacts of your actions for someone else. You took responsibility, you tried to right your wrongs, and that's something most people wouldn't do. I married you because I loved you, no matter what, and to this day, I still feel that way. I still love you, no matter what." She said reassuringly. "Guess I know why I married you... you always were sweet." A smile crossed his face as he finished slicing up the ham. As he set the electric knife down, the doorbell chimed. "I've got it." He said, leaving Danielle to finish the potatoes. Outside on the steps, the figure in black checked the gun that was situated in his jacket. The suppressor was tight, the gun was loaded. Double tap and go. Quick and clean. Less than a minute to the door, less than a minute back to the car, and out of the neighborhood in five. Walking to the door, Cody Wolfe unchained the latch and unlocked the deadbolt before he opened it, Jackson coming downstairs just as he did. The instant that he opened the door, Cody knew what was coming. In the doorway stood a man in a black suit, a black overcoat covering it, sunglasses shielding his eyes, despite the grey and snowy day. Out in front of the house was the black SUV, windows and rims tinted out. The man in the doorway reached for something in his overcoat, and before Cody Wolfe could react, the man had drawn his suppressed pistol and fired two shots. The ex-Marine, ex-Venom Incorporated commander stared his killer in face, his expression one of shock as he realized what just happened. One round had struck his heart, the other his right lung. Jackson looked on, watching as the scene unfolded in what appeared to be slow motion, frozen in horror as his dad crumpled to the floor, the man in the doorway turning and making his leave. A distressed cry came from the kitchen. "Cody?" Danielle came running, and she froze as she saw her husband lying on the ground, the shooter climbing into the SUV and speeding away. As the shooter got into the Suburban, the driver floored it away from the house, and he took off his glasses. "Quick and clean." He said. "Positive he's dead?" Asked the driver "Absolutely. Shot to the heart and one to the lung." "Good job." The driver said, clearly impressed. In the house, Jackson rushed to his father, holding the dying man in his arms, the blood staining his white hoodie as it poured from his father's wounds. Cody's breathing was sporadic, ragged, and in mere minutes, it stopped, his body going still. Jackson remained there, blood pooling around him, his dead father in his arms, as his mother called the police, who showed up less than five minutes later, four squad cars, a crime scene unit, and a detective. The flashing red and blue lights, the tape, the officers, everything seemed to be unreal. Jackson remained with his father for as long as he was able. It took the police several minutes to get an ambulance on scene, not that it mattered. Once they had arrived, the paramedics shooed Jackson away as they tended to the dead man. Retreating to the small landing at the bottom of the stairs, Jackson watched in silence as they covered his father in a sheet, loaded him onto a stretcher, and wheeled him out. The officers and his mother were conversing, and she was explaining what had happened, giving descriptions of the man and the vehicle he was in, but she had really only seen the man's back and the side of his face. Once they finished with her, they approached Jackson to see what he knew. Due to the location of the door, he hadn't really seen the car or the shooter. The officers finished quickly with him, both shooting glances at the boy's bloodstained hoodie and hands. Jackson was glad when they left. He didn't want to recount what happened, hell, he was still trying to come to terms with it. The police remained at his house for two hours before they finally left, bidding the family their condolences, not that it made anything easier. Jackson remained on the staircase landing, sitting and staring at the space on the floor where his father had died in his arms. He could hear his mother sobbing in the kitchen, but he could find no tears of his own. Eventually finding the will to stand up, he forced himself up the stairs and into the bathroom, where he rapidly stripped out of his bloody clothes and climbed into the shower, turning the water up as hot as he could get it. Standing beneath the shower head, he closed his eyes, and despite the heat, he was shivering. Outskirts of Dojoville, 3:00 AM, Christmas Morning Jackson woke with a gasp, and found himself lying in his bed, his body drenched with sweat, and yet he was shivering. Throwing the old Army blanket off of himself, he got out of bed, and looked at the clock, noting the time. He sighed, running a hand through his hair. Walking across his room, he pulled the curtains back on his sliding door, looking out to see the night, the moon illuminating the darkness. Unlocking the door, he went outside onto the balcony. Wearing nothing but his combat pants, he surprisingly did not feel cold. Looking out to the horizon, he saw the Dojo on his left, the wilderness before him and to the right. Taking it all in,he sighed. Leaning on the railing, he ran another hand through his hair, taking a deep breath. This happened every year. He couldn't get away from that damned memory. He needed a drink... He really needed to go back to bed, and yet he remained, standing in the icy air, silent.
open for replies and comments.
•
Hey. He's human... The more you know. Seriously though, awesome read. Haven't read much about Cody, but I know he was a stone cold badass. It's nice to see the human side of things. The pieces fall into place and it makes for a bleak story. Edge of the seat kind of thing. If that makes sense.
• Looking out over the balcony to the snow, Wolfe watched through drowsy eyes as the two trekked across the snow. Christ, how he wished to be out of his own mind...

  • Eventually they stop. Kari had to set her down and move the blanket so her leg would show. It appeared that he was fixing some sort of bandage, a bloodied one at that.

Despite being exhausted, he could still make out the bloodied bandages and the wounded individual. Even depression wasn't enough to stop his morality. Jackson was by no means going to leave these two stranded on Christmas in the snow. Walking back inside, he threw on one of his shoulder holsters, sliding his revolver into it after making sure it was loaded. Looking for his ACU jacket, he grabbed it from the doorknob of his closet, throwing it on quickly. He put on his combat boots as well, quickly lacing them and heading downstairs and out the door. He'd worry about blisters and the cold later. Heading outside, he made his way to the two people further off in the snow. "Hey!" He shouted over the wind. He sounded exasperated, and looked fairly ragged, his hair a mess, bags beneath his eyes. "How badly is she wounded?"

  • Kari jumped, a little surprised by him approaching so suddenly. He notices, once he's closer, that they dont look like people at all, as they are werefoxes after all. [Word from the writer: Just imagine a smaller werewolf with leaner bones and features and a fox's fur pattern.] Kari didn't quite hear what he said and stood tiredly in between the two, his instinct to protect his sister being the only thing keeping him awake. "S-stay...st-stay b-back..." he said, exhausted.

  • He stopped for a moment in his tracks... What the hell were these things? Upon hearing them speak, however, he wasn't surprised. The Dojo was home to plenty of rather oddball beings, and these two seemed to be no exception to that rule. He moved a little closer after a moment of deliberation with himself, raising his hands to signify no ill intent. "How wounded is she?" He shouted again.

  • "You're not going to find anyone awake or open at this time of day on Christmas." He said, approaching them. He looked to be fairly young, but haggard. Then again, he was awake at three in the morning.

  • "I can stabilize the wound, but I'm not a surgeon. I've got a friend that's a trained medic and has dealt with bullet trauma, but we need to keep your friend alive long enough for that." He said, calm, but sounded tired. Wasn't the usual way he spent Christmas, but Jackson wasn't going to let these... individuals... die.

  • Within a few minutes, they arrived at a small two-story home outside of Dojoville, the house undecorated despite the holidays, the lights off. Approaching, the man unlocked and opened his door, holding it to allow the two to enter. "Take her to the kitchen. The table in there should do. Keep pressure on the wound, make sure she's not losing tons of blood." He said.

  • "Great... then we're in the same boat." He said dryly. Pacing upstairs, he finally found his phone, and sent a message to the individual he spoke of earlier. Sliding the phone in his pocket, he returned downstairs with a trauma kit. "She's on her way. I'll do what I can until she arrives." In the light, the two could tell that the man looked absolutely wiped out, like he'd been awake all night. His hair was more of a mess than usual, his clothes appeared to be merely tossed on, and he certainly sounded exhausted. Approaching with the kit, he set it down on the table beside the injured individual, and began looking for the necessary tools to clean the wound, along with painkiller.

  • Mari was holding her brother's hand tightly, whimpering as she kept her eyes squeezed shut. "Hey, you're gonna be ok, just try to stay calm, ok?" he said to her, along with other reassurances. She was definitely smaller then Kari, only being around five feet tall, whereas Kari was seven feet, six if he slouched.

  • "How long ago was she shot?" He said, preparing a shot of morphine, keeping it away from the female's eyes as he wasn't quite sure how she'd react to needles. He figured that carrying on conversation would be beneficial to her taking her mind off the pain, but he was worried about her keeping the leg if she had been wounded for some time. Walking around to it, he inspected the wound carefully, to see what all would need done.

  • "Around an hour ago, why?" he asked. Her leg looked fine for her condition, but her orange fur was tainted red around the area where she was shot. From what he could tell, she was shot around her thigh, right into the muscle.

  • "Good news is, she'll likely going to survive. You're lucky that the round didn't get the femoral, else she would've been dead within ten minutes of being shot." He said, injecting the morphine into her arm as he spoke. "You're going to start feeling really out of it in a few minutes. I'm going to clean it up and let my friend handle getting it out. We are going to have to shave the hair off of this part of your leg. Don't want to risk infection." He explained as calmly as he could. Quickly, he then headed upstairs to see if he could find something to get the hair away from the wound.

  • The man disappeared upstairs, and returned roughly five minutes later with a set of electric clippers and he appropriate attachments. There was a knock on the door, and after setting the clippers down, he went to the door, opening it and allowing whoever was there to enter. Coming in to the room, he was followed by a woman in a hoodie and sweatpants. She had a backpack over her shoulder and a duffle bag in hand, her hair tied back behind her head in a ponytail. She was shorter than him, built like a runner rather than a soldier. Her hair was a lighter shade of blonde, her skin fair and her eyes a pale blue. Unlike him, she didn't look wiped out. Setting her gear down, she set about getting to work. Washing her hands, she put on a pair of surgical gloves she pulled forth from her backpack, along with a case of surgical tools. Setting them on the table, she opened the case and selected the tools she needed, setting them aside for sterilization. Pulling out the set of clippers that were already on the table, she set to work, cleaning the hair off of the wounded area of the female's leg. She finished quickly, pushing the fur to the floor. Sterilizing her tools using a solution in her kit, she quickly set to work on removing the round which had lodged itself in the flesh. Carefully, she extracted it, and set the bloody bit of metal on the table. Cleaning her tools, she then retrieved stitches from her kit along with another solution to clean the wound out. The morphine prevented the patient from feeling all of this, thankfully. Upon cleaning the wound out, she carefully stitched it back together, taking her time to ensure it was done properly.

  • Throwing away her gloves and packing her gear up, the woman smiled, a friendly and genuine smile, and spoke. "It is Christmas. Nobody deserves to lose anyone on this day." There was a clear and soft French accent to her voice, but after she spoke, her smile faded as she glanced over at the man, who was leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed and eyes closed.
