Why are so many games on sale this year?

Every fall release this year has already been discounted by 50% or more. Yesterday Amazon sold the Battlefield 1 bundle with statue and game for over $100 off. It's great for consumers, but it seems ridiculous to sell a game for $60 and then a month or two later sell it for less than $30. Why are publishers doing this to themselves? Is this the beginning of the end for $60 games?

  • Either they've sold well enough that the publishers feel they've made sufficient profit at that price point (Battlefield 1 is likely an example of this), or it hasn't sold well enough, and publishers are desperate to move as many units as possible in the hopes of making just a bit more of their money back (Battleborn may be an example of this)
