A question for everyone to answer

Present true evidence

Present falsified evidence

36

There is a topic you strongly believe in which you believe is correct. However, not everyone is interested in what you are saying or they don't believe you. You have been permitted a chance to write one last report on this topic which will be read by many people. Your previous attempts to convince people by giving them the true evidence has failed, but you now have an opportunity: if you falsify the evidence, you will be able to win-over support for your topic, and nobody will ever know what you did. What do you do?

  • Well first, I look at the results from either choice in understanding. Form there I then make a decision that gives everybody better.

  • I wouldn't try anymore. People who outright deny the truth have their minds made up, the only thing that can sway them at that point is themselves. The more you push, the further away they get from you and become more solidified in their stance. Falsifying evidence only perpetuates the problem, say in the long-term it turns out that you were wrong: what then? You've changed people's minds on an issue under false pretenses and have damaged societal progression overall because we then have to go through the motions to get over that particular issue when that time could have been spent on something more legitimate. I don't feel there's a situation where it's ever acceptable, even if it seems right at the time. Even if you're right about the subject you're covering, you're cheating the people around you out of the experience of coming to terms with it on their own which builds a stronger foundation than a lie ever could. Even if it takes a generation for the change to happen, people are less likely to discard work they've personally put into something rather than having someone tell them "This is how it is". It's the difference between watching someone do something and learning how to do it yourself, you appreciate it more. The better long-term situation is to let the truth come forward on its own, lying to people to get your way is a short-term and self-serving victory under the assumption that you know better than everyone else. Present the facts, if they don't listen then let them sit in their echo chamber until they're ready to come out.

As much as I'd want to manipulate the evidence for the sake of my argument, I think I'd go with the honest truth in the report. Anybody worth winning over will read it thoroughly and make a decision based on the data presented to them, and the others can continue being armchair experts for the rest of their lives. There's also the possibility, as Prototape said, that my viewpoint is proven wrong further down the track. I'd rather not be one of the sensationalist media outlets that I loathe, and I'd definitely not want to lead even more people down the wrong track from that decision. By presenting the data as-is, any flaws can easily be found in proof reading without the need for extensive cross-referencing.

  • If nobody will ever know what I did, then yeah I'll falsify evidence. If it's true despite the false evidence then there's no harm done, and so long as it's presented with all the true evidence as well then it's not the only thing holding other people's beliefs up.

  • If my previous attempts failed they are most likely debunking it through assumptions and conspiracy theories that hold no weight, so I'll most likely give up.

      • Here's the problem with your poll. Reality has become subjective. Most people determine truth and lies in terms of what they want to be truths and lies. Inb4itsnotmeitstheotherguys

      • The risk of discrediting yourself by using false evidence is a greater harm than the risk of using true evidence and not convincing people.

Present falsified evidence for the sake of being contrarian irregardless of the presented scenario.

        • If you lied to win, there would be no point to winning the argument. You did not convince people that your perspective was right nor did you teach them anything. Rather you convinced them, with a persuasive lie, that you were correct. There is a difference between proving yourself and what you stand for correct. Proving your perspective can help teach people and is a skill of a good debater. Proving yourself is no different than one upping others, you did not gain anything but a false victory and have hurt the pride of others. Additionally, if you had to lie to prove yourself you have misinformed your opponent of the truth which defeats the whole purpose of debating. I believe the purpose of debating is to try to get others to understand your perspective while understanding theirs so that you both can find the correct answer.
touch me bby
