Because JJ's shield was up when running at Nathaniel, it was guarding his head and chest. Most of his stomach, sword arm, and legs were exposed. So, the bullet hits the shield, lodging itself. Cautious of the bullet, JJ then throws the shield aside as he finishes his charge. Now upon Nathaniel, JJ raises his sword for the killing blow.
