The sound of bare feet slowly moving through the stalks of grass came to Desmond's attention. But it was no surprise that he'd have a follower this late. Chloe preferred the darkness... And she had an innate ability to follow him no matter where he went... Her tracking skills were abnormally good for someone so simple. She was dressed in her regular attire, however, she was wearing a large black sweater over her top tonight. It seemed she was still fond of her shawl like clothing. But... She had recently been using a massive stone like shield... One that dominated her back and clung like a magnet. Strangely enough however, she seemed to carry it with ease... The only one who could carry it with ease. Any one else noticed how heavy the item was... But Chloe said it was light as paper. It had strange bright lines running across the surface and a slight groove, matching that of the lines on her body. "Most people sleep at night... Unless you are taking pills... Or you are nocturnal... Shouldn't you be sleeping?" She asked, standing next to him, as the massive shield on her back gave off faint light.

 • "I've got better things to do than sleep." In truth, the Ka'kari allowed him to stay up as long as need be, to an extent. Everything had a limit, but this one was up there. "I could ask you the same question." He figured she'd been sleeping, the only reason he'd chosen the massive crest to take up residence for his nightly thoughts. He could see down into the complex, and with some fancy shooting and maneuvering his bullet, could kill anyone near her room need be. Sensors on the hallway told him people's comings and goings. Paranoid? He preferred overly cautious.

 • "I sleep during the day... The night is my free time." She have a slight smile and pulled the shield from her back, the large object shrinking to the size of a pocket watch, which she quickly stuffed in her sweater pocket... She eventually took a seat next to Desmond, her knees folding under her as her bright orange eyes scanned the activity below. "You must really enjoy... Watching things." She said simply, not really surprised to find Desmond monitoring something... Or anything.

 • "Vigilance pays. Keeps people alive." Mainly you, he thought to himself. But she didn't need to know that. The fact he was being paranoid to make sure she stayed safe was his thoughts and his alone.
Why do you care about her Desmond? She's nothing special.
You're right. She isn't. But she saved my life and I owe it to her.
Sure you do.
• "Do you enjoy being like this, Desmond?" Chloe turned to him with an odd look in her eyes, knowing full well that most couldn't find pleasure in this... Work. "I want an honest answer. Not because 'you have to' or because it's a living... But does it really make you happy...?"

 • Desmond didn't say anything for a moment. When he'd started out, it was because it was his only option. That, or die. After Durzo had died, he'd no longer taken contracts on those who were innocents. The Ka'kari helped with that, when brought to his eyes, he could see people's inner sins. The good in them, And the worst. Whether they were clean or stained with guilt. A sick part of him took pleasure in bringing justice to those who earned it. He was the face of Retribution, the black Ka'kari had given that to him. He was a killer..yes, but he no longer killed innocents for money after Durzo had died. "Yes. I am happy." He replies. Why he was happy, she didn't need to know. She didn't need to know why he did; or what he did.
You're more and more like Durzo than you know. She deserves to know.
No, she doesn't. He thought back. If Chloe could sense any kind of magical energy, she'd notice the ring on Desmond's finger did exactly that; emanate magical energy like a ticking time bomb. The Ka'kari was packed with magical energy, it just took the right person to sense it.

 • Chloe had picked up on something... But only because of her shield... Her abilities were biological in tone... As strange as they were. Her shield however... Worked like a magical extension, spiritual in power. "Then I guess... I guess that's all that matters." She nodded to herself in acceptance of his statement and gave him a soft look. She had more she wanted to ask... But she couldn't feel the words coming to her. Desmond was always so intriguing, but it felt like an impossible task to ask him questions...

 •
You look like you're brimming with questions Chloe..
Chloe heard a voice in her head, one that sounded friendly but oddly unnerving. At the same time, she felt another pulse of magical energy from Desmond. The voice had a low tone, one that was almost casual and somewhat lazy. Desmond didn't react in any way, he didn't know when the Ka'kari wanted to telepathically communicate with people, only when it was him.

 • Chloe wanted to ask who had spoken to her, but she knew it wasn't Desmond's voice... And she might spook him otherwise... Instead, she waited, listening closely as her eyes casually looked towards any place another person could be.

 •
If you're looking for a person, you won't find one. I'm on Desmond's finger right now, and in your head.
Indeed, the black ring with the ruby on Desmond's finger trickled with magical energy, but Desmond hadn't said anything, continuing to stare off among the hills. Being quiet certainly wasn't new to Desmond.

 • My head... Then... You are a spirit... She thought, figuring if it was in her cortex, it could probably read her thoughts. Or... A Mesmer?

 •
A Ka'kari..to be exact. One of six of my kind, sentient magical artifacts that bond to a chosen host, giving them new abilities and capabilities they wouldn't normally be able to do. I myself, am the sir advanced and strongest, the other five are cheap copies that were designed after me, but are flawed.
The voice pauses, seeming to think about something for a second. Unlike what Chloe thought, it couldn't read thoughts. It simply saw her looking around for a person.
Some of these abilities, Desmond hasn't told you about Chloephina, and wasn't going to. But I've decided to take it upon myself since he's a brooding jackass.
• Chloe brings her knees to her chest, lines running across her mostly exposed legs. The cold didn't bother her much, so she often stuck to light clothing. But she ha recently picked up on modesty... Considering her species mostly just wore... Light attire. She stayed silent, listening the beings tale without interruption...

 •
Let's get the biggest bombshell out of the way. Your friend here, Mr. Desmond Galloway, is immortal. Thanks to yours truly.
The voice says casually, pausing after the statement to see her reaction.

 • Chloe blinked in surprise but didn't say much else... She had nothing to say. She had met many people who said they were immortal, and she didn't tend to question them. She wouldn't start now, but if that was true... She just had to hope Desmond stayed on her side. Immortal... She mulled over in her head... Such a strange thing.

 •
By immortal, I don't mean indestructible. He can still die. But the price is far too great to do it without concern. A great paradox..
The Ka'kari makes no thought or attempt to explain what it meant, but questions Chloe instead.
And what about you? What are your thoughts on your companion?
• Chloe was quiet a moment... Her thoughts empty at first. She pictured Desmond as a very cold and empty person... She couldn't really see past the disposition he carried... She wanted to... But the task was monumental. He's... Quiet... And very serious. Grave in fact. But I think he's got a good heart. She couldn't say much else... There was little she knew about him. But perhaps it was the same with her... He knew only the basis of her past... She had omitted details for a reason.

 •
That he is. Despite what he appears, he's not as aloof as he'd have you believe. He's been through a lot, but I'm not making excuses for him, just telling you some things he wouldn't himself. You know that he stands guard every night over your room? Sitting up here while your sleeping and making sure no threats come to you, even if the chances are minute. Something that was drilled into him by his master, Durzo Blint. My former host. "No matter how small the chance, it's still a chance."
• Chloe thought for a moment, mostly flattered by Desmond's act. Most might be creeped out or worried, but she had been raised with constant surveillance... Privacy was a foreign concept. She looked to the far end of the apartments, the open way she had walked from, reaching Desmond with relative ease. Everything had a certain sense to it... She could simply tell where he was by thinking about it. It's something she thought everyone simply had. It's... Kind... But I don't really sleep at night... Mostly the day... And... I can't imagine he likes to spend his time doing such things.

 •
He doesn't. He'd rather be out in the night, skulking around like he normally does. But you..he thinks there's something about you that's different. Something that makes him want to protect you, not just because you saved his life.
The Ka'kari pauses.
Do you know the price of my immortality, Chloephina? Of course you don't, that's a rhetorical question..every time Desmond dies and is brought back, somebody he loves dies in his place.
• He really owes me nothing... He's free to leave... I can't wrap my head around why he would stay. If anything, I'd be a shackle to his nature. Chloe bit her lower lip in thought, green lines tracing along her hands as they pushed into the grass, making the stalks turn large and green... Growth, healing, the bodies redemption at her finger tips. He must know that I don't offer much.

 •
On the contrary Chloe, you have plenty to offer him. A friend. Desmond died three times before he found out the price of immortality. Three times he threw his life away because he thought he could just come back, but in reality he'd killed three of his best friends. His heart has been ripped to shreds, he had to kill his own master, the only father figure he'd ever known. He's not all hard edges and unbreakable walls Chloephina. He does care, in his own strange little ways.
• Well... Best to make sure to be worthy of such companionship... I appreciate you telling me this. She rested her chin on her tucked knees, her eyes closing as she breathed in the cool air. It was nice out, and she enjoyed talks... Even if they were just in her head. It was certainly a lot to take in... But she would handle it one minute at a time, calmly as ever.

 •
Only because he never would. He's built a wall around himself and refuses to let anyone close, for fear of losing them. If you have any questions, just ask. I'm always around.
The Ka'kari chuckles before Chloe feels it's presence leave her mind. Desmond glanced over towards her, eyes narrowing. "You okay?" He questions. His cold and hard exterior seemed a lot less cold and hard now after what Chloe knew. His dark and brooding eyes still seemed as dark as ever, but there was a around that..probably.

 • Her orange glance met his cold stare, fire to ice... Yin and yang. "Yeah... Just enjoying the peace of the night." She figured Desmond didn't need the truth... Not always. She didn't like to keep things from him... Mostly... But that voice seemed secretive anyways... "The quiet allows for thinking."
