The explosion did have an effect on his body mind you, but when the canister was thrown JT activated a special augmentation, one he had kept hidden for quite some time. His muscles moved and shifted around inside his body until they quickly hardened to the point where even bullets were unable to affect his body, though the unaugmented limbs were protected by greater covering by the HardLight. The explosion served to knick him back in the other direction with great speed as if he was some sort of human tetherball, which was hurdling right towards Damien, though he couldn't move his limbs very quickly as they were all stuck in their dense positions.
