Zombie Storytime: As the Red Fern Dies

Part 1: Opening shot, sound of a baseball bat being hit by a ball. Pull back to show a child in an oversized jersey standing in a large field, finishing his swing. Switch to front view to see child looking up at the ball flying through the air, squinting at the sun. Follow his gaze until the ball begins its downward arc, and then hear a bark. A golden retriever runs into the frame, chasing the ball as it drops. The child smiles, yells out praise of the dog, and watches as the golden retriever runs back to him. He pets the dog, grabs the ball from its mouth and hits the ball again for the dog to chase after. Wide shot of boy in field and a see a house off to the left with a woman standing on a porch watching boy. The woman, presumed to be the child's mother, smiles and muffled radio chatter plays in background. Hear brief mentions of infection and outbreak areas. A man is seen sitting at table listening to radio with a grim expression. Looks from the table out the window at his son playing with the golden retriever. As the father stares out the window, more radio stations begin to play, with overlapping warnings of infection, quarantine and death tolls. Radio static and overlap grows louder until it grows to a wall of sound and the screen cuts to black. Fade in sounds of birds chirping. Suddenly show the window the father was staring out of, now with severely broken glass panes and dirt covering the edges. Hear footsteps on dirt before seeing the boy walk into the view of the window, a shovel in his hand, and heading towards the house. The golden retriever then follows shortly after him. The boy enters the house, visibly tired and upset, throwing the shovel into the kitchen without regard to where it lands. He collapses onto a couch nearby, beginning to sob into what appears to be a shirt/dress of his mothers. The golden retriever enters the house, pauses for a moment, turning its head in search of the boy, and then walks over to him. The dog nuzzles its head underneath the boy's arms and begins to lick his face. The boy turns away, still upset, but eventually hugs the dog for comfort. Days pass as the boy tries to survive on his own with the food he has available in the house and around his deceased parent's farm. He attempts to do as adequate a job as his parents did, but fails in several tasks, making him more frustrated. The golden retriever follows him around constantly, watching the boy do the tasks and helping by carrying around small items. Eventually the boy realizes that they are running out of supplies, despite his best efforts, and decides to embark on a trip to the nearest general store, 10 miles away (or whatever is normal distance from a farm to civilization). Unsure of the journey, the boy packs enough food him and the dog for at least a day. They set off to scavenge for supplies.

 • Part 2: The boy and the golden retriever are walking along the road. The dog sniffing along the shoulder of the road and the boy kicking rocks to pass the time. Off in the distance a single car is pulled off to the side of the road, seemingly abandoned. They approach the car, the boy examining it for any odd signs, and the boy tries to peek through one of the grimy windows. He sees a body lying in the backseat, blood stains covering the head of the body and window. In the front seat, still buckled in is another body hunched over the wheel with blood splattered on the front windshield containing a small bullet hole. The boy tries to get into the car, but after several unsuccessful attempts breaks the glass with a rock, setting off the alarm. Sensing the danger of the blaring car alarm, the boy quickly opens the door, and frantically searches through the car for any supplies. All he finds of use is the gun used to in the deaths of the cars passengers, and he scurries out of the car, placing the gun in his bag and running quickly away from the blaring car. Hours pass and the boy and the golden retriever reach the small town. Having been to the town several times before with his parents, the boy walks towards where he remembers the general store to be, keeping a lookout as he does. Several of the buildings have already been looted, broken glass and garbage littering the streets of the small town, but he carries on in hopes of finding some kind of supplies. As they approach the general store, the dog begins to growl and bark at a darkened window on the second floor of the general store. As they get closer to the store, the boy sees that most of the windows are already broken and the shelves inside have been pushed over. The store has already been looted and destroyed beyond repair, however the golden retriever continues to get more anxious the closer they get, repeatedly looking up towards the top of the store and barking. The boy decides to go into the store, despite his fear of what may lay inside, and the dog sticks close to his side, its growls becoming deeper as they enter the store. The boy looks around at the looted store floor, trying to see if there is anything of use left over, but to no avail. Making his way to the back of the store, the boy finds the stairs that lead to the second floor. He looks down to the dog, who is now silent, but looking up at the stairs with a snarl, and then he begins to slowly climb the stairs. As he makes his way up, he can hear little rustling sounds coming from above. When they reach the second floor, the boy sees several cats gathered in the corner near the window and the dog begins to loudly bark. The cats, startled by the noise, scatter out the window and away from the pair, to reveal a mangled body, ravaged by the hunger of the cats. The boy runs back down the steps and out of the store, puking as soon as he reaches the sidewalk. After a few moments, he begins to regain his composure, only to still hear the barking of his dog inside. It suddenly turns to yelps of pain, and the boy runs back into the store. Several of the cats have started attacking the dog as they try to defend their gory meal. The cats claw at every part of the dog, climbing all over it, swiping at its eyes and neck, and the boy lunges into the fray, swatting at the cats and pulling them off of the dog. He throws several of them down the stairs, each landing with loud crashes as they land in the debris on the floor. Still fighting the cats, the boy pulls the golden retriever down the stairs to escape their attacks. The pair make it out of the general store with scratch and bite marks across both of their bodies. The commotion however, brings out several walking corpses from the looted buildings nearby. The boy sees the walking dead begin to come out from their homes, and hurriedly limps away in pain, hoping that they don’t follow. From a rooftop at the edge of the town, cunning eyes watch as the boy and his dog escape out of the town.
