The "ground zero event" may have made it possible to acquire additional mites after the first transmission per character. Otherwise, it does seem to be possible to transmit all 5 individually while on patrol. Supposedly, you can still receive mites after the first transmission as long as the activity during which they were transmitted does not end (return to orbit, end of strike/match).
