I'm not convinced that Maya was killed by the device, that's easily the biggest hole in this theory and requires a much larger leap than having the stranger be Maya. She obviously left the notes behind on purpose, they weren't just found, so you are making the assumption that she went on a suicide mission into the device instead of leaving the facility like she explicitly says she plans to do:
I’m resigning... I can’t take this journal out with me, so I’ve left it for the others, and asked them to continue the log.
We already know that Maya experimented with/built time travel devices and would therefore be as knowledgeable as anyone (and hardly timid about doing so). No such evidence exists about Chioma doing that kind of independent research, though admittedly I don't know what was going on at Hyperion. Maya's questioning about the implications of time travel are also cited in the hunter cloak "The Ishtar Dilemma"(small aside, while not a guardian, the Stranger certainly has a hunter character model.), further cementing a picture of the type of person who would make herself into The Stranger to, in her own words,
"....bring something back to now. Something you needed." "Or go forward and learn something vital. If you knew how to control it, how to navigate across space and time"
• I should've clarified. Maya entered the device at least 2 times in Vex 5 looking for Chioma, and none of those times did she die. At the end when she says she'll see Chioma soon, I don't know if she was physically leaving the facility or whether she went back into the device to see Chioma. Maya kept using the machine to "see" to Chioma in the past, maybe she was doing it again, a final time. If she did leave the facility and went to live happily ever after with Chioma, then the whole find Maya part obviously is wrong. And admittedly that part, as you can tell, is speculation on my part but I think a good story direction. Even if that is incorrect, that doesn't invalidate Chioma as a potential candidate. We know the device is not a time traveling device, so it alone can't be the answer. Depending on the nature of Hyperion, Chioma might be even better equipped than Maya. All that said, it's all in fun for me, and I really don't take this serious. I try to put out plausible theories, and take a little liberty in speculation, recognizing I'm going to be wrong 90% of the time and am ok with that.

Apologies if I made it sound like this was super serious and confrontational. Not my intention. Anyway, it seems to me like she's actually leaving to go to Hyperion or wherever. Since she states that Chioma still writes to her all the time it certainly seems like they still have a good relationship and it's well within the realm of possibility she is welcome to go see her without using the device. And for that matter, if she was just going to use the device there's really no need to "resign". The decision to do that suggests that whatever obligation she had to the proto-FWC she was working with was the largest barrier to actually traveling to visit Chioma in person.

  • No problems, and you didn't come off as confrontational. Maya and Chioma's relationship does seem fine. I just think Maya was becoming obsessed. Rather than take a vacation or write response letters to respond to her wife, she kept using the device instead.

  • You're forgetting that in the originally story rasputin was an exo (a warmind inside I don't know). It's not conceivable that Bungie liked this story idea and kept it for at least one character. Maybe the exo stranger is a warmind.

Citing anything from what people say was the original story is questionable at best, and that's not what the OP is suggesting anyway.

  • Oh I know. It's just that they have kept much of what was the original story. OPs theory whilst great to read is conveluted. Often the best explanation is the simplest one.
